The DOJ ordered US Marshals to the house of the pardon attorney who refused to sign off on a pardon to give Mel Gibson back his guns. Big law firms told her they supported her but did not want to be seen representing her.
This is the use of government-sponsored fear to silence dissent.

lifehack if you are sick of a phrase people are using just start using it yourself but but it in quotation marks when you do. this grandpafies the phrase so fast that people will run screaming from its usage. trust me this little trick "hits different"

But think about it from Halligan's perspective: her entire future depends on MAGA enduring & her being seen as a hardcore MAGA loyalist. And doing a wretchedly bad job but getting a nominal 'indictment' that a judge will then dismiss is better for her than not indicting, b/c she can blame the judge.
Selectively falsifying bits of the grand jury record was an obvious way to get herself in huge fucking trouble *and* lose the case, but she looks to have done it anyway because Dear Leader wanted to get Comey indicted and the statute of limitations was right about to close.

Please don't let her be the only one. Larry Summers is a massive figure in Democratic politics. He's also a racist and misogynistic sex pest, a best friend to Jeffrey Epstein for more than a decade after his first conviction for child prostitution, and a reactionary centrist to boot.
Per CNN, Elizabeth Warren is calling on Harvard to cut ties with Larry Summers after Jeffrey Epstein's emails released last week by House Dems featured Summers making sexist comments + asking for Epstein’s romantic advice.

The DOJ was targeted for corruption early on in Trump's second term. It's hard not to conclude that the extent of a government office corrupted by Trump is in direct correlation to his ability to use the office for his own ends and his ability to influence it.
Absolutely no way to read this and not conclude that the Department of Justice has been deeply corrupted. And this is from a time when career lawyers were in place, pushing back against illegality. With firings and resignations, the politicization will just get worse.

The best I can justify this nonsense with is Nuzzi heard the phrase "spitting bullets" while watching Gurren Lagann and thought of a mech shooting a bullet that somehow shot another bullet.
In case you writers out there have ever felt imposter syndrome, "From his mouth the bullet theoretical launched the bullet possible" is an actual sentence in whatever this is.
Vanity Fair's West Coast Editor Olivia Nuzzi was a star political correspondent until scandal led her into exile—and to a California up in flames.

In an excerpt from her book, ‘American Canto,’ she takes stock of scorched earth.

Sexual harassment & bullying is power. Power, prestige, & connections of the abusers leveraged against those without it.
Academia is full of these power differentials. That coupled with institutional refusal to enforce anti-discrimination measures leads to this type of abuse. He's but ONE of many.

The legal profession is chock full of women who interviewed with lots of law firms in hotel rooms as first or second year law students
If you are not in academia, you might not know this, but job interviews used to be held at conferences IN HOTEL ROOMS. Women candidates in a hotel room alone with often all-male committees. People sitting on beds! The horror stories I've heard.
I thing I sometimes thing about is that university departments were still doing job interviews in hotel rooms in the mid aughts

Remember the recent middle-of-the-night apartment building raid where children were dragged outside naked & zip-tied in the street while black & Latino residents were _sorted by race_ and piled into separate vans while their apartments were ransacked & robbed? That raid? So it resulted in 0 arrests.

a big runoff last night, in New Orleans:

Calvin Duncan was exonerated after spending *28 years* in prison; he tried to get his own case records from the New Orleans city clerk—but the office dragged its feet.

So Duncan ran to become city clerk himself, and yesterday ousted the incumbent.

truly it is a mystery why women find it hard to get ahead in academia
"I could be a mentor to this very sharp person but as they aren't interested in me romantically I'm going to have to cut off all communication with them."

"Also, only men get the best mentors like me who can help them get into top journals. Clearly that's because men have higher IQ than women."
