For those of us without clear memories of politics in 1971.

Yes, the corporate lawyer Lewis Powell wrote the "Powell Memo" in 1971, a document that became a manifesto for businesses to fight against "Big Government" and an influential call to action for corporate political activism. The memo urged business leaders to counter what they saw as a radical attack on the American free enterprise system by organizing and building political influence.
Purpose: The memo was a call to action for the business community to become more politically involved to defend corporate power and challenge what Powell saw as an increasingly hostile environment from "Big Government".

There's a very strong argument that the failures of Democrats and liberals to halt the authoritarian takeover comes down to them spending 25 years building an ideology & media infrastructure designed to avoid accepting or even acknowledging the truth of this one FDR quote.

“Democracy has disappeared in several other great nations, not because the people of those nations disliked democracy, but because they had grown tired of unemployment and insecurity, of seeing their children hungry while they sat helpless in the face of government confusion and government weakness through lack of leadership,” FDR said in a 1938 radio address. “Finally, in desperation, they chose to sacrifice liberty in the hope of getting something to eat.”
