Why the 2026 Holyrood election matters more than you think. 🧵

In my latest Sunday Mail column, I’m digging into the rise of Reform UK and what it means for Scotland. We can’t afford to ignore the threat of "populism" that offers easy slogans but zero solutions for the working class.

Entertaining as this spat is, it contains not-a-flicker of recognition as to WHY this might be happening.

For 16 months, a tax-exile-oligarch-owned, mostly right-wing press, has abused the privilege of these exclusive private sessions, to misrepresent the gov't on every issue. This is the FO stage.
Broadcaster backs televised briefings shocker

I think, if you are reporting a press release, quite literally sent to you, as "sneaking out", and the 18th of December as "the last day before Christmas", you sort of asked and answered your own question.
No10 has sneaked out, at 4.50pm on the last day before Christmas, that they are cancelling the daily afternoon lobby briefing for journalists.
And they'll sometimes be cancelling the morning one too, to in favour of a televised press conference, to which "content creators" will be invited.

The Lords blocked the Employment Right's Bill again last night.

Thanfully on just one point about unfair dismissal...but it's still delaying the WHOLE bill further!

244 to 220.

So who is among the 244?

202 Tories
26 crossbenchers
9 non-affiliated
3 DUP
3 UUP
1 bishop

Look at the names...

Another depressingly tone-deaf performance by Badenoch at #PMQs. Our continent is threatened from East and West, and Kemi wants to talk Westminster gossip. Rarely have I seen anyone as witless, be so pleased with themselves. Truss springs to mind. Johnson. Cameron.

WAIT - I think I see a pattern.

Last year Sky News was rending its garments over Starmer's free eyeglasses: WHAT INFLUENCE DID LORD ALLI BUY?

Now, RefUK get £9m from a crypto bro, they have not one word about the donor's interests; just BRAVO NIGEL, barely concealed glee, and "what a huge boost... money goes where momentum is". 🤡

I don’t recall as much fuss when the Tories were caught actually lying about their final Budget and keeping the truth from the OBR. What became of this investigation? www.theguardian.com/business/202....

Love this!

Our government are, for the first time in 15 years, human.

They are like you and me.

They know how to talk to everyday people, including children.

And it's for all of us they are working to improve the country.

So this is interesting from Robert Peston.

The claims of people inside No 10 briefing the press about the PM fighting for his leadership appear to be wrong.

As I speculated this morning, it appears to have been nothing more but a response to a question from a journalist!

If we're talking about bias, why do BBC politics programmes, from Politics Live to the Laura Kuennsberg Show, still always begin with a look at the newspaper front pages, which are overwhelmingly biased in one direction. Helps frame the entire news agenda and debate in their favour

Chris Mason is what happens when a Hospital Radio DJ, whose sole qualification appears to be a sort of soporific inoffensiveness, is somehow promoted to BBC Politics Editor - a position that demands unflinching insight, objectivity, and sharpness. It's like a puddle trying to be the ocean.

This is what is happening. It is cynical. It is strategic. It is organised. It is well funded.

And we need to pay attention.

The far right - and their cheerleaders, mimics, tribute acts, and handmaidens have identified two presentational frameworks that give them cut-through and traction. 1/7
