What a lively walk with #sophiefromromania this morning at sunrise - pursuing squirrels (without success), growling at speedy Shuggy the collie, taking a treat from his owner, smelling a rat and home for a fine breakfast

You couldn’t get that movie made. The plot is too outlandish.
Trump betrayed Ukraine, secretly colluded with Russians against Europe, and has a secret line with the Kremlin outside of official overview, hidden from everyone including US spy / national security agencies. These are the reddest of flags. A spy sits at the White House.

Do consider becoming a member. It’s always a great read - and also independent local reporting is fundamental to the health of our politics and places. (I’ve been a longtime supporter and am a small investor.)
These are our six campaign pledges - the things we will do next year if we manage to add 1,000 new members. They were chosen by our readers because they’re things we believe will make Manchester better.

Share them and join the campaign 🙏

I’d lost touch with my contact the former trade union and Google spin doctor - then I saw he’d started a health tech company with big ambitions to help spot serious illness early. D-J had a great story to tell…but let’s hope he doesn’t move fast and break things open.substack.com/pub/rorycell...
My friend from the dark side tries to catch disease early...
I had a long conversation this week with an old contact from the “dark side”, as we journalists used to describe the world of PR, despite knowing that many of us would end up there.

Enjoying this rather well written memoir by the last Tory chief whip. Struck by his use of the adjective ’Trumpian’ to denote dishonesty - eg BoJo at “Trumpian’ levels in asserting his innocence. Maybe the BBC should bring him in as a defence witness in any Trump libel suit?

www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/... This movie about Parkinson’s which is being filmed right now will be one of the highlights of 2026
Casting announced for But When We Dance
Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans star in a touching story about two people with lots in common - a great sense of humour, a love of dance, and Parkinson’s

Removing the two-child limit accounts for less than 1 per cent of social security bill. To remove 450,000 children out of poverty, that's pretty good return on investment.

70% of the additional spending from removing the two-child limit will go to families who are in work. This is targeting support for low-income working households who are being priced out of a decent standard of living despite doing everything asked of them.

It's such a bizarre framing. Labour MPs think taking 450k kids out of poverty is putting the country first! That's why they wanted it to happen! It's not because they personally benefit.
Headline on The World at One just now:

"Sir Keir Starmer has denied putting the Labour Party before the country by ending the two-child benefit cap".

Can we please go back to reporting the actual news, not someone's partisan take on it?

On Today before 7 a former Trump official claimed without challenge that US spending on Ukraine far outweighs that of Europe (at least contestable) and that Europe was now irrelevant to the peace talks. 30 mins later Steve Rosenberg made clear that Europe’s irrelevance was a Kremlin talking point

2) Decide how you want to be rewarded for your aggression
3) Leak the list of your desiderata to the US press
4) Wait for the US president to enforce your wish list on your victim.

All in all, let’s note one important factor - Russia, the murderer and agressor, was not asked or pressured to consider, and as a result, has not even slightly indicated ANY interest in just peace or ceasefire.

That is THE bottom line.

Not content with selling out Ukraine to Russia and thereby putting the security of America’s allies at risk, the Trump regime is trashing the reputation of US science and risking the health of its children by rewriting the CDC website to suggest a link between vaccines and autism
