Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Yeah, this is my issue. It’s like… we did this already. 2020 was awful. And he won anyways. My guess is there may have been some kind of cheating.

I also kind of -pray- that’s the answer, because if people sincerely voted red in 2024, then I’ve lost all faith in humanity. >_<
