(This is also specific to domestic flights, I haven't tried to opt out of the cameras when passing through immigration, and assume that would be much more difficult.)

Plenty of caveats apply - I have privilege along various axes that make it easier to opt out, and the airports were mostly in blue states. But for others who are uncomfortable with increasing levels of electronic surveillance, it's worth knowing that airport face scans aren't yet mandatory.

Don't know how representative this experience is, but for what it's worth: every time I've asked to opt out of the face-recognition cameras at U.S. airports, there has been zero pushback. I say "I'd like to opt out, please," the TSA official says something like "sure, no problem," and that's it.

(To be clear, the comedy is deliberate; Emily Brontë knew exactly what she was doing when she wrote passages like this.)
Quote from Wuthering Heights:

" “There, I’ve found it out at last!” cried Hindley, pulling me back by the skin of my neck, like a dog. “By heaven and hell, you’ve sworn between you to murder that child! I know how it is, now, that he is always out of my way. But, with the help of Satan, I shall make you swallow the carving-knife, Nelly! You needn’t laugh; for I’ve just crammed Kenneth, head-downmost, in the Black-horse marsh; and two is the same as one—and I want to kill some of you: I shall have no rest till I do!”

“But I don’t like the carving-knife, Mr. Hindley,” I answered; “it has been cutting red herrings. I’d rather be shot, if you please.”

“You’d rather be damned!” he said; “and so you shall. No law in England can hinder a man from keeping his house decent, and mine’s abominable! Open your mouth.”

He held the knife in his hand, and pushed its point between my teeth: but, for my part, I was never much afraid of his vagaries. I spat out, and affirmed it tasted detestably—I would not take it on any account."

Huge chunks of the novel are basically Cold Comfort Farm on the moors.

Wuthering Heights is overrated as a romance, and vastly underrated as a comedy.

It's pretty vague, but Frankenstein mentions getting "bones from charnel-houses" and collecting materials from "the dissecting room and the slaughter-house" when making the original monster.

What a generous act from someone who deserved so much better from the United States.

In Dallas, Organizers Mourn the Immigrant Victims of Recent ICE Shooting
At a vigil outside city hall last week, advocates gathered to “center the victims” and to condemn the “dehumanization” of migrants by the federal government.

Seeing this dynamic with U.S. immigration policy last year was maddening.

LABOUR: The Tories have set a CUNNING TRAP!

-oh really?

LABOUR: They have proposed SOMETHING AWFUL, and if we say "that sounds awful," they will CRITICIZE US.

-huh.

LABOUR: BUT! We are much too clever for to fall for that.

-huh?

LABOUR: Instead of OPPOSING the awful thing, we will SUPPORT it.

If a Democratic victory seems likely in 2028, I suspect some of the stays and shadow docket rulings will be preemptively superseded by more formal opinions limiting presidential power. (Which will also help Roberts to argue that the Court is once again nonpartisan, so expansion isn't necessary.)

Feels like Josh Ritter is somewhere in the mix.
Lyrics from Ritter's song "Kathleen," which read

Well, I know you are waiting and I know that it is not for me
But I’m here and I’m ready and I saved you the passenger seat
And I won’t be your last dance, just your last goodnight
Every heart is a package tangled up in knots someone else tied
I’ll be the one to drive you back home, Kathleen, yeah

Our household also benefits a lot from the subsidies - I understand the "touch the stove" arguments, but am not exactly eager to be the hand that performs said stove-touching.

Formulated well by Jason Mendoza.
Screenshots from the sitcom THE GOOD PLACE. The character Jason Mendoza is saying "I'm telling you, Molotov cocktails work. Any time I had a problem, and I threw a Molotov cocktail...Boom, right away, I had a different problem." The final image shows the character Eleanor saying "He makes a strong case."
