Spent a decade saying Nintendo should bring back King K. Rool until fans voted him into the best-selling fighting game of all time. Now vibing as Nintendo rolls out what's next for the Donkey Kong series. "If you listen, you can hear it coming...” 🐊🍌🦍

Today was Gregg Mayles' last day at Rare. He posted this lovely little farewell over on social media. Since he's not on Bluesky, I hope he doesn't mind me sharing it here.

There's probably no video game designer, let alone creative mind, who has had as much of a positive impact on my life as Gregg.
A poem by Gregg Mayles, including a photo of him looking out at the countryside with Googly Eyes.

A Rather Resplendent Rewarding Rare Ramble

Grant me moments of your time,
To tell a story versed in rhyme,

In eighty nine this tale does start,
When famous wall did fall apart.

Still standing tall a lad left school,
Who'd employ this daydreaming fool?

A chance arose to go into banking,
Choice he ignored and forever thanking,

Local paper had tiny ad,
Go join Rare? WHAT! You must be mad!

He tested games then got into design,
Which somehow turned out reasonably fine,

Mentored by the Ultimate greats,
Expectations of Rare game traits,

Each game adding to his skills,
A memorable ride of many thrills,

First three toads and then some apes,
Donkey, Diddy, barrels of japes,

Grand adventures of bird and bear,
Whacking Ghoulies with haunted chair,

Critters of paper in gardening charm,
Sporting parties waving leg and arm,

Sailing pirates through stormy weather.
Players creating stories together,

Others too, much less well known,
With Rare magic in them sown,

Wonderful games made by splendid teams,
Enchanting players have been their dreams,

The Ruby Ramble one final chapter.
Of lovingly crafted games and laughter,

For here is where this story ends,
Thirty six years it's been my friends,

For come the day October fourteen,
At Manor Park then no longer seen,

His sack of fun upon his back,
To set off down a different track,

Leaving behind some parting advice,
Have no fear, it's helpful and nice,

If captivating players is what you seek,
Keep on making Rare games unique!

Now time to start new tales to tell,
Farewell to Rare he waves, farewell!

Gregg
Feast Layer is the sort of creative level archetype that, under developers less visionary than the Bananza team, would not show up until at least the sequel, in lieu of safer retreads. With just how much “meat” it has, it’s little wonder it stands out as so many people’s favorite, including mine.
Lettuce on the #Kongversation discuss the 14th world of Donkey Kong Bananza. Will DK Cheese it and live to bring home the Bacon, or will Void Kong beat DK's Meat? Before we fight... we FEAST! Note: This episode only contains spoilers through the end of Sublayer 1401.

Does a Bear (have a) shit (fit) in the (Krem)woods?

Bet this guy went to some dark places in the last 29 years. Full-on bearosphere loser shit. Probably got indoctrinated by Kremling Krew propaganda, went on the Monkey Meat Diet, and regularly swims in raw sewage in the re-polluted Mekanos.

it's not often I openly draw fan art, but this boss from Donkey Kong 64 has always been a favorite of mine, and I have always wanted to make art of him

The #Kongversation is joined by @pyrrhickong.bsky.social to harmonize discussion on Bananza's 13th world! Lost, alone, and incarcerated, how will Donkey Kong get his groove back? Note: This episode only contains spoilers through the end of Sublayer 1300.

All the gratuitous violence in Bananza had me thinking... Wouldn't be MONDO COOL if I combined a 90's Capcom style fighting game with Donkey Kong?! Let's call it "Donkey Kong: Jungle Rumble"! A girl can dream...

This is pretty bog standard Nintendo YouTuber slop, to borrow a phrase. The bright side is, Nintendo most certainly considers Donkey Kong Bananza “a BIG Game,” even if these mystifyingly-click-getting users don’t!

Day 109 of #DonkeyKong art and #DKBananzaSpoilers
A couple weeks back, some friends were drawing K. Rool from memory; to me this is easier than breathing, so I had to challenge myself a bit.
I got a few minor details wrong but overall this came out pretty accurate.
#AltersDoodleTag
The King of Rot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The details I got wrong were: he has a jagged "pants hem" above his belt, the emblem on his belt buckle has a circular mane of bananas in addition to being goopy, the "cracks" or zigzags on his belly also extend over his chest

Pauline, meet Diddy and Dixie Kong! DK's present realigns with his past in Donkey Kong Bananza's Racing Layer, and the #Kongversation takes no shortcuts when discussing this historic reunion! Note: This episode only contains spoilers through the end of Sublayer 1100.

The key art to the Kongversation's "Donkey Kong Bananza: Sublayer 1100" episode. Diddy and Dixie Kong ride a rhino, colloquially referred to as a Rambi, as they race against Donkey Kong (also on a rhino) in the Rambi Rumble stampedeway.
Internet contrarians: “I don’t want [REDAKTED] to come back because then we can’t have cool new villains in Donkey Kong’s rogues gallery.”

Bananza team: “Hold my Apple Juice.”
The Donkey Kong series has had one villain who gets celebrated (and also Wizpig sometimes). I love that guy, but I want to give the new villain flowers, too! Have a new video on how Void Kong establishes, differentiates, and forces himself as a great new villain to compliment Bananza's themes!

“Go play Bananza” is unironically going to be my response to those people

“Where is the new 3D Mario”
Go play Bananza

“I want Odyssey 2”
Go play Bananza

There’s literally a 3D platformer, made by the Odyssey team sitting there waiting for you. It just stars a monkey instead of a bing bing wahoo.
I will not hear anyone out who is begging for a new 3D Mario right now unless they’ve 100%ed Bananza three times.
