them from the syrup & boil the liquid down to concentrate it. I enjoyed a few w/ a pecan cake & containers of fruit in syrup got frozen for winter treats. It's difficult to describe the flavor: floral, fragrant, now just slightly tart. The fruity syrup is lovely in a cocktail or spritz. Recipe:

Like apples & pears, quince are members of the large Rosaceae family, but they are exceedingly sour & too hard to eat raw, even when ripe. I like to poach them in a light syrup with lemon, sugar, honey & vanilla. As they simmer under parchment, they become a beautiful rosy pink. Once soft, I remove

🍽️ Although I buy produce at the grocery store for months of the year, I'm a big fan of seasonal eating. And that means that from May to November I'm enjoying food from my own garden & from the local farm stand. In autumn, I start looking for their quince harvest so I can make a batch of this treat.

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

Yep. It's definitely a topic among my social circles, but we're loathe to think of leaving our extended support systems of friends & family we've built over decades. And it also feels like giving up. Where's the red line? I don't have an answer but can also imagine being trapped if I delay too long.

Interesting. I have heard they don't go out of their way to let "foreigners" own land. I should really do more research, but I guess I'm in denial that things here could get bad enough to make me flee.
