Everything that makes Aotearoa New Zealand unique is related to Māori culture. Welcome to the country, that's a pōwhiri. We are gonna thrash you at sport, that's a haka. Traditional meals, that's a hāngī. Matariki that's our New Year

If you don't like Māori stuff maybe you're in the wrong country?
This is a subtle thing, but I think I would COLLABORATE more if there was UBI.

When fund my own creative pursuits (e.g., music, blogging, streaming, ect), I can rarely afford to pay other people to join in and I feel very strongly that no creator should contribute for free.

But if we BOTH had UBI…
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

I think Hipkins is the person I hate the most in NZ.

That's wild because there are SO MANY PEOPLE who are SO MUCH WORSE THAN HIM, including the entire current gov't.

Maybe I hate him more because he COULD be a leader but instead has the moral fortitude of a damp sock

Chris Hipkins takes shots at Te Pāti Māori, Winston Peters
It comes after a recent poll saw Labour come out on top as best to handle most issues.

I grew up with the belief that you DO NOT wear a band's merch to that band's show.

Is that a thing in NZ?

However, I'm seeing Garbage this week in NZ and I sitll have my 1998 "Version 2."0 US tour shirt.

I feel >25yo vintage band merch from another continent is perhaps fair game, despite my rule?

Do I have any friends in Singapore that would buy and ship something to me if I sent you the money?

There's a book I can only find there that only will sell in-country.

An absolutely gorgeous day for Extravaganza Fair in Wellington! I had never been to Hikoikoi Reserve in Petone before and the grounds were perfect for one of the biggest versions of the Fair I've ever been to!

NZ Govt suppressing the publication of clinically developed appropriate guidelines for gender affirming care to force Simeon Brown's christofascist extremism on our kids.
In some good news, today PATHA has finally been able to release the 2025 Guidelines for Gender Affirming Care in Aotearoa New Zealand. You can read them here: patha.nz/resources-an...

Thunderstorms in Wellington are rare enough, but to be woken up from a dead sleep because thunder is so loud is unique enough that I can't even get mad about it.

I've easily watched at least 8 different versions of Raye performing "Where Is My Husband" live just in the past month and every one of them is one of the best live performances I've seen in a long damn time.

Love hearing her chops on something so upbeat and groovy.

An amazing NZ story of a consumer taking a int'l jeweler to a dispute tribunal after they claimed the "lifetime" guarantee on a wedding ring ought to be for 12 years, since the average NZ marriage lasts 14yrs with 2yrs of separation.

(This is not the wildest detail.)

Fellow USians complaining about people using "USians" instead of Americans: 😂

1st: It's fewer characters. This is social media.

2nd: Outside of your USA bubble, in other countries people OFTEN say "North America" to refer to the US *AND* Canada, so "Americans" can feel imprecise.

3rd: Get over it

Pluribus Ep 1: Fascinating. Somewhat belaboured, but great concept and dark humor.

Pluribus Ep 2: Dear god make the boredom and the pithy jokes stop.

I truly have no patience for the lugribious pace of prestige TV.

Yay Lesbians, though!

So ... the government just forced us all to have referendums on *existing* Māori wards because Local Communities Deserve Choice, but now they're unilaterally abolishing our regional councils because they don't like the Choices we made?

I will not volunteer to mod a subreddit.

I do not have a single second in my day to mod a subreddit.

I have no interest in the drama that comes from modding a subreddit.

I would need to be paid to put in the effort it takes to mod a subreddit.

(sometimes I need to repeat these mantras)

I remain on FB to I keep track of 100s of people I care about in the US.

There are a few highly educated older friends of mine (~25yrs older than me) who do nothing but share AI-generated fake-but-potentially-credible content.

Fake political reporting, scientific discoveries, music news, & more!

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

It brings me so much joy to see the entire NZ timeline filled with Secret Santa posts again after our off year.

(I do not participate, because gifts cause me nuclear levels of anxiety both as a giver and receiver, but I love watching other people get gifts!)

Other times I've been unwell the past 2yr (oof, what a 2yrs) I've been able to focus on exercise. When I couldn't exercise I always had playing guitar.

This time I can't do most exercise AND I can't play guitar.

This is already the longest I've gone without playing guitar maybe in my entire life 😬

The coolest thing about going to Hand Therapy, other than the hand therapy, is they give me FUN TOYS AND GADGETS.

Let's bring back giving adults stickers and finger puppets for going to medical appointments.

Oh, so I should stop using em dashes because of AI since LLMs are DESIGNED to emulate well-structured professional writing LIKE MINE?

I gave up my addiction to inappropriate use of semi-colons & ellipses. Em dashes are my approved therapeutic alternative. They'll pry them from my cold, dead fingers

Now it is OFFICALLY official: I have been advised by an actual doctor that I should not attempt the triathlon in 10 days.

Alas, looks like I'll have to wait until 2026 to knock this one off my bucket list.

On the bright side, more time to get faster at the running portion!

Excelsior!
