To be clear, this is directly relevant to publishing in Canada. And it is the only way to publish as a startup press that doesn't qualify for grants and won't for a long time. Also, IT. IS. GOOD. BUSINESS. Which is something that seems decidedly lacking in what we assume about our culture sector.

This is the way.

(Obvs, though, "going viral" is not the key.)
Get a grant or go viral? Canadian filmmakers behind GRIN forge a new audience-first path

This. And also on Insta. But also? Feral about THIS book. This book has been out for years and had very enthusiastic fans. OF COURSE the show's trailer would elicit a feral response; in this case, a very, very positive one. THERE. WAS. TIME.
for whatever reason i think they underestimated how viral this would get on tiktok which is odd bc booktok has been ferally horny about ice hockey for at least a couple of years now
Let's talk about Heated Rivalry, yeah? Because this is a PUBLISHING. STORY. It's a story about a Canadian author writing a wildly successful romance novel, having that novel optioned by a Canadian director who loves the story & characters, respects the genre, and involved the author throughout. AND

Another Canadian publishing story of a very different nature

The Hurt Book Sale is on! We won't pass these mildly scuffed books off as perfect, but they are exactly the same except for some minor bumps and bruises, mostly to the cover at the edges or corners. Here's your chance to pick one up at a great price!

Well, home internet is out and cell service is slow af. My workday is screwed but I'll just take it like a day off 🎉. A dark, rainy day off. (If this persists to the 9pm Pacific drop of Heated Rivalry I will RAGE.)

Is it me or do I need to report a Telus Internet outage? Any Vancouver folks (West Side) also having problems?

So many people are on holiday and I am not but all I am really doing is waiting for Heated Rivalry to come out on Friday because I am One Of Those Ladies.

Y'all, there IS something about this book. The author IS very, very good at math and at explaining stuff. Also it's a topic every knitter knows they can learn more about and there isn't really another book that covers the basics like this.
@kateatherley.bsky.social @kpwerker.bsky.social Finally picked up my copy of Math for Knitters this week. The clerk at my small-town indie bookstore said he'd sold 3 that day alone. "What is it about this book?"

I told him Kate is very, very good at math & at explaining stuff.

This is very bad.
Vancouver's 2026 draft budget has PASSED.

Approved on a 7-4 vote on party lines, with ABC in favour and councillors Fry/Bligh/Orr/Maloney opposed.

Property tax freeze, $50 million more for VPD, and cuts to Arts, Culture, Planning and Sustainability departments, among others.

Full story to come.

There was a weird week years ago when @kateatherley.bsky.social and I started using mechanical keyboards around the same time. They're so loud and retro and satisfying! But also, absolute nightmares during meetings. Today, bittersweetly, I will be swapping mine out for a quiet (smaller) one.

There are few things more delightful than your teenager having the same best friends since kindergarten. Now they're all six feet all, arguing about how to make pancakes after a sleepover. They all crammed into my kid's small bedroom like they have since they were seven. So much sucks; this does not
