These are all sourced from “A People’s History of the United States,” and I struggle to think of a more prescient page from a history book that I have read than this one:

useless scholarly exercise in morality. But the easy acceptance of atrocities as a deplorable but necessary price to pay for progress (Hiro-shima and Vietnam, to save Western civiliza-tion; Kronstadt and Hungary, to save social-ism; nuclear proliferation, to save us all-that is still with us. One reason these atrocities are still with us is that we have learned to bury them in a mass of other facts, as radioactive wastes are buried in containers in the earth.
We have learned to give them exactly the same proportion of attention that teachers and writers often give them in the most respectable of classrooms and textbooks. This learned sense of moral proportion, coming from the apparent objectivity of the scholar, is accepted more easily than when it comes from politicians at press conferences. It is therefore more deadly.
The treatment of heroes (Columbus) and their victims (the Arawaks)-the quiet acceptance of conquest and murder in the name of progress—is only one aspect of a certain approach to history, in which the past is told from the point of view of governments, conquerors, diplomats, leaders. it is a little odd for me even now. my sister and I both didn't really physically grow in what I feel is a traditional way? I feel like I was always assumed to be a number of years younger than I was back when people saw me in person.

it's actually wild that your entire social world and support system can collapse overnight if you lose the physical ability to participate in it the way you used to.

I've seen it happen to people. it was more of a slow fade in my own experience.

there's a lot of grief around it all. the isolation messes with my head. I've been trying to figure out what needs I'm even allowed to have in a relationship bcuz I made them so small 😔

but everyone views me their own lens and preconceived notions, and I know our realities are so drastically different from average... so it often ends up being dehumanizing and/or patronizing.

and then also... people don't know how or don't want to try to repair rifts in relationships.

yeah. idk, maybe how I actually practice my values is in opposition to my ideals (I don't know if my perception of reality is always accurate), but all I really care about is that people try to understand and sit with hard feelings. to make an effort to meet me where I'm at.

whenever I say I feel like I'm on my deathbed, ppl dismiss me and tell me it's not that bad.

it's not that smth couldn't happen to change that (though idk how), but ppl rush to shut down the feeling, or "fix" the narrative, bcuz they can't bear to face the hard emotions it brings up in them.
