Hey, would anybody be interested in a Bluesky #sblchat? It would probably have to be a slow chat to start …

They are always learning.

If leaders are serious about ending war, women need a seat at the table.

Global data, 1989-2011: When women are involved in agreements, peace is 35% more likely to last 15+ years.

Men alone shouldn’t decide the fate of nations. Gender balance is especially vital with high stakes and hot tempers.

"... and the results show, in stark detail, what teachers and researchers have long understood: That poverty and performance are deeply connected."

Making progress against poverty will help education. Big time.

Nearly 5 years after schools closed, the nation gets a new report card
There's some good news in math, mostly bad news in reading and lots of questions about why students are still struggling.

Now think about this for teachers. For students. For schools.
In toxic cultures, being a workaholic is normalized and sacrificing sleep is glorified. The best way to get ahead is to burn out.

In healthy cultures, quality of life is expected and having a life is celebrated. You're encouraged to put your well-being above your work.

First day of 2025 with students is in the books! Even found this little inspiration (gift from a former student) tucked inside a book (thought I had lost it).

For the record, it was, and they were. ☕️ ☺️

Always sweet when students think to bring you something. However, I’m all about the cards.

I’m also all about a good science pun.

I have been saying this for years. I don’t want to work in a family. I want to be part of a community. One that has a common goal and honors each person’s unique contributions.
A company isn't a family.

Parents don't fire their kids for low performance or furlough them in hard times.

A better vision for a workplace is a community—a place where people bond around shared values, feel valued as human beings, and have a voice in decisions that affect them.

Student: Well, first thing - that’s not a picture, that’s a gif.

Well played.

Students making our Astronomy Model Rubric today, and I overhear, “Well, it definitely should not be a pizza.”

Excellent point, sixth graders. Excellent point.

Also, if you are curious how we do it …

Students Owning the Assessment Process Through Rubric Creation
Ah, rubrics.  The favored tool for assessment by teachers.  Loved for their wonderful detail and their range of performance levels, rubrics are a great way to communicate expectations to students. …

Impostor syndrome: “I don't know what I'm doing. It's only a matter of time until everyone finds out."

Growth mindset: "I don't know what I'm doing yet. It's only a matter of time until I figure it out."

The highest form of self-confidence is believing in your ability to learn.

This is so cool!!!

Ahem ahem. All schools take note.
Fun fact about teaching at my Danish school: when we are sick, we’re not required to write sub plans because we’re sick.

The subs are paid well to come up with their own activities with the students. We also have the same staff of subs all year, so the students know them fairly well.

Reflecting today as we start diving in to our project about astronomy. Students had lots of great thoughts about what worked well … and what didn’t.

Kicking off our new project about astronomy today with some drawing while listening to Holst’s Jupiter. Check out some of our creations!

Not a bad way to spend a Monday after a break.

Lots to be thankful for this year but greatly enjoying this moment of calm before the storm. Nothing beats a strong coffee and a buttery croissant.

Also incredibly grateful for the community building happening here. Thank you all.

For as much as constructivism is slandered, surely this is what we mean by any "science of teaching/learning": not what a brain does with nonsense, but how skilled educators can tap into student interest, past experience, and emotion to construct schema & scaffold sense-making.
And treating students as empty vessels is simply not an accurate metaphor for learning. We can try to pretend otherwise, but nobody comes into formal education as a blank slate. Rather than focusing on what the brain does with nonsense, let's center the minds of learners in our pedagogy.
This is a good response to all those people pushing the narrative that we just need to teach skills with direct instruction in order for students to succeed in math. Treating students as empty vessels devoid of personality just demeans math for everyone.

One of the central jobs of everyone who works in education but is not a classroom teacher should be ensuring classroom teachers have enough (time, energy, knowledge, training, resources).

If you nurture and value teachers, you nurture and value the children in front of them.
