Kallista had always wondered what it would look like when her life fell to pieces. And now she knew. Fire blazed and great plumes of smoke rose into the air above the island of Erapetra. The horizon echoed the ruin, clouds red and glowering in the light of the setting sun. The brigantine Paxos sailed away, wounded, diminished, but free. Captain Kallista Audax stood on the stern, not wanting to look away yet. The fire stung her eyes even now. The ashes of the jungle, and of her precious naval career, remained in her mouth. There was work to be done, but she needed this minute to catch her breath, to make her peace, and to quiet the racing of her heart so she could be everything her crew needed her to be. How hopeful things had looked, just this morning. How foolish she had been, to think it could ever have gone her way.

Audrey is in, let's say, a bit of denial about her feelings towards Ramsey.
Audrey pushed Ramsey, but instead of pushing her away, Audrey went with her, pinning her down to the floor. Ramsey offered no resistance, only moving so that she was fully splayed beneath Audrey’s body. Audrey hated her for being so close, especially since Audrey was the one keeping her that way. “The door’s open,” Ramsey murmured. Audrey hated the presumption, the consideration. She hated it so much that she devoured Ramsey’s mouth, her lips mashing against her teeth; but Ramsey was kissing her back, and damn it, Ramsey was so good at kissing, her lips soft but firm, sliding her tongue into Audrey’s mouth, her taste at once intoxicating and infuriating.  Ramsey’s hands tangled in her hair. Audrey moaned into her mouth, the sound unwilling and damning all at once. Ramsey’s hands slid from her hair to her shoulder, then traced down each vertebra of her spine, making Audrey roll her body against hers. Through the fabric of her dress, her skin drank in the heat of Cora’s body.

“What can we get you today, eh?” The vendor waved at a menu full of brightly painted pictures bearing next to no resemblance to the foods they represented. “Everything’s fresh and handmade. Chicken or goat tacaňos, one for six bits or two for eight. For a kiss from a pretty lady, I’ll throw in a tonic water, gratis.” “No goat,” Millie shuddered. “I ate so much goat in Hellion Hills, it’s a wonder I didn’t sprout a pair of horns.” “A demon trapper, eh?” The vendor moved two spatulas over the iron griddle in a steady rhythm, sorting strips of chicken and goat into separate, sizzling piles. “Beautiful and brave, Florita.” Rolling her eyes, Millie dropped eight bits on the counter. “I’ll take two chicken tacaňos with crema and a tonic-water. No kisses, just coin.” “For you, Florita, anything.” The vendor flashed her another brilliant smile, white teeth dazzling against burnished copper skin. His spatulas flew, portioning meat and rolling it deftly into pale flatbread before dropping it in a vat of sizzling oil. It was hot work. Sweat soaked through the young man’s thin linen shirt making it stick to his muscular chest in interesting ways. Millie tried to let the pleasant sight distract her from the steady buzz of the demons powering his cart, but it was no good. Sulphur tickled her nose and that feeling she could never quite explain hummed under her skin. She felt two small scorchers, one each for the griddle and the oil vat, and an ice demon keeping the drinks in the chiller cold. There were like pebbles in her boot, persistent irritations poking against something tender.

Instead, he stared at Mïn Ashå, and all the way on the other side of the beach, Mïn Ashå stared back at him with a taunting smile. Challenging him to raise an objection. In the arena, the two enemies talked, too low for Askaly to hear—how she wished she had the nensii’s enhanced hearing now!—Kano’s knife never leaving Sonya’s neck, black goo dripping from the demon’s teeth to sizzle and evaporate as it sploshed on the sand. “Raiden!” Askaly joined the urging voices. “The devil Akizzachor is part of Kano, not a separate entity,” the god finally replied. “Accusing him of breaking the rules would also put in question the Great Kung Lao’s victory.”

Once again, she’d made a fool of herself and put the ship in danger. Perhaps the abbey was the best place for her to be. She was sure Kallista Audax would be perfectly content to see the back of her as soon as possible. And to think, she still hadn’t even apologised for her first misunderstanding of Kallista, when she’d accused her of pushing the crew too hard. The list of things she needed to apologise for since then was piling up. She drank the rest of the coffee as quickly as she could, ignoring the heat searing the top of her mouth. She didn’t want to be found still slacking off here when the Captain returned.

Then, with an intake of breath from Kallista, the mood shifted. “Will you come back here tonight?” she asked, looking through her eyelashes. There it was again, that smidgeon of vulnerability, as if she thought Geni could possibly say no. Geni nearly answered glibly, but caught herself at the last moment. Suppose she did think Geni could say no. How could she not know what a magnetic pull she had over her? And yet. “Of course. You won’t be able to get rid of me.” Kallista rubbed her thumb along Geni’s bottom lip. It was all Geni could do not to tremble in response. “Good, because... I intend to make the most of every moment I get with you, before we return you to Maramis.”

Without conscious thought, Ashrah stroked the scar on her right arm, another mark Nitara had left on her. Soon, this would be over. Once Nitara restored herself to her full health, Ashrah would challenge the nensii once more, and they would fight until she rose victorious and cleansed. Images of her triumph shattered when the core of the Netherrealm vibrated with a low, deep, all-encompassing throb. Ashrah’s spirit trembled, and she lost her balance only to fall into Nitara’s arms. “What’s going on? Is it a colossus?” Ashrah squeezed her eyes shut, blocking out the sound and waiting until her head stopped ringing. “No. It was a Pulse. I am now one Pulse older.”

Her father had tried so hard to turn her into what he wanted. And he nearly had but there was this one piece of her that would not bend or break. A shard of something that kept sticking out of the clay he was molding. Constantly cutting him. Reminding him that he couldn’t shape her entirely. The two words of truth she dared to say to him aloud but cowered as she did. Words Natalyiah and the rest of the Rainbow Lotus had found the fire and backbone to tell the rest of the church. Two words that gave them the will to shape their world their way. Oh, I'm ready for the moment and the sound Oh, but maybe I was ready all aloooooonnngggggg!! The song’s final lines swelled above the rain and the walls inside the deli and her own soul. She felt the pressure of tears tinged with regret and frustration push at the back of her eyes, but a tremble of fire reminded her not to give in. This was a truth that was to be told without fear and softness. This was something she needed to say and have accepted. Something that Natalyiah had done so easily and often. Something she accepted about herself silently moments before Aoife was stolen away.

You’re the only person left who can get them through this season.” A thick stillness filled the air as the two women stared at one another. Vola stared at her friend in admiration. Just a few hours before, she’d been a complete mess. And now? Irreverent, dramatic, and still the bravest woman Vola had ever seen. How did she do it? Where did she draw so much courage from?

1 Her fingers brushed right past the ladder, but her body kept going forward, bounced by a wave and by a too-eager movement in anticipation of the fact she should have been holding onto the rungs — — and she plunged headfirst into the waves. The world underwater was far more frightening than she would have expected. With the angle of the sun, the deep forest either side of the ship, the shadow of both the ship and tender’s hulls, Geni was facing head down into an impenetrable darkness. She panicked, burbled out a short scream, and scrambled to get the right way up. Out of the sole shaft of sunlight came a hand, lace-cuffed. Geni grabbed onto Kallista’s hand with both of hers, and let her pull her up, out of the water. The chill air was suddenly too full of seagulls crying and waves shushing and crew calling out above. 2 Kallista pulled her close while she fought for breath. “Doctor Philistos, now’s hardly the time for a swim.” Geni laughed, and then she cried. Her hair was dripping enough water down her face to hide her tears. “Come on,” Kallista encouraged her, helping her back to the rope ladder. “Both hands — that’s it — there you go.” With Kallista’s help, she was firmly on the ladder, and then over the railings, dripping all over the deck, but safe at least. Why had she spent all this time worrying about Kallista coping without her? She’d be fine. It was Geni who couldn’t handle herself. How had she ever thought herself worthy of the remarkable Kallista Audax?

After a maybe a minute of us gripping each other’s arms, just staring at the weird sight, Pan gave a roll of their eyes and waved us forward. Neither of us moved a muscle, and Pan instead pawed at the window, like when Muffin, the Rivière’s cat, does when she wants in from the cold. Something about the look on Pan’s face, the tilt of their eyebrows maybe, made Lucy let go and take a step forward. I was quick to grab her hand and whisper harshly, “Lucy, no!” From the other side of the glass, a silky voice said, “Lucy, yes.” Lucy glanced at me, but it was quick, like she couldn’t look away from Pan. She gave my hand a squeeze and let go with a soft, “It’s all right.” Then she moved to the window. It wasn’t all right. How could it be, with the monster from Gwen’s story looking in at us, wanting to be let into the room. Was it my fault they were here, somehow? It felt like too much of a coincidence, them showing up so soon after Gwen told me how dangerous they were. Again, I kicked myself for not telling Lucy the story. Pan’s eyes were locked on Lucy as she moved to the window, and I began to feel my fingers start to tremble, like they did when I would look at mom in that bed before she... Anyway, I just didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how to keep the girl I...I didn’t know how to keep my best friend safe. Lucy paused when she reached the window, leaning in as Pan offered her a friendly little wave.
