I really want to clarify that my goal isn't to "dunk on the leftists" w/ this point. I wasn't trying to look down on anyone & score rhetorical points.

That's the opposite of what I wanted to do: Emphasize the importance of solidarity when we need it most, & not miss the forest for the trees.
I sometimes see people dismissing the No Kings protests as performative.

Protesting *is* inherently performative. It's unity in the face of injustice, to inspire more people to notice and join. That leads to change.

It *is* brave to protest under a government that attacks dissenting speech.
We need to confront our country's past and present injustices to ever get out of this. This was always possible.

Fascists thrive on denial and weaponize ignorance. The only way we move forward, and stop repeating history, is to face that hard truth.

Hitler admired the United States' racial hierarchy and Jim Crow laws, a blueprint for his vision of Nazi Germany.

After WW2, Germany confronted its history of racism and brutality. America, meanwhile, clung to the myth of "exceptionalism" to deny those roots that always existed.
genuinely why do so many americans have a nazi phase or become genuine nazis. on a fundemental level you’d think that we’d have as much shared hatred for nazism as we do for the british
"How did we get here?"

"This isn't our country."

American exceptionalism includes the belief that our country was immune to what we see when other countries fall to authoritarianism. That it could never happen to us. I believed it too.

Exceptionalism is taught from the beginning, it's at the core of our country's identity. Anyone who *does* try to correct that truth gets shunned & silenced, as the ongoing attacks on education turn historical fact into "anti-American ideology."

I keep trying, but I hate the Cassandra effect.
This is why I don't have any real hope for the future of the U.S. There are not enough Americans (and hardly any in positions of power and influence) willing to do the hard, ugly work of admitting, confronting, and working to change the terrible things we've done.

When people mock all those wine moms at the No Kings protests and it's casual misogyny.

America has a dictator who loots the government for his private gain, locks up his opposition and launches dubious military strikes without any oversight.
Anti-American often means saying anything that contradicts the mythology of exceptionalism, even (or especially) when backed by evidence and historical fact.

If it sounds Orwellian it's because it is.

If the Nazi tattoo was such a stupid mistake he would have gotten the thing covered or removed. It also wasn't a stupid mistake like a cartoon character tattoo, it was a fucking Nazi tattoo. You don't keep that unless you want it.

This is very true and I’d go further to say thankfully it’s found out now so another democratic candidate can build visibility. The election is over a year away. It is incredibly stupid to be like β€œactually that guy should stay in this race” when you’ve got 13 months left in a senatorial race
Putting a Democrat with a Nazi tattoo in the Senate normalizes Naziism in our federal politics for a long ass time.

All these recent stories about secret Nazi group chats? Anytime that happens going forward will be met with "But Platner."

It's not a purity test. Think through the consequences.

it's dizzying to me that stories like this -- a corrupt grift built on democracy-wrecking lies that culminated in a coup attempt -- barely breakthrough anymore. they're just daily background noise now.
COLLINS: The NYT is reporting your legal team is seeking $230 million from your own DOJ now in response to the investigations into you. Is that something you want?

TRUMP: It could be, yeah. I don't even talk to them about it. All I know is they would owe me a lot of money. They rigged the election.
I'm right there with you.

He could have gotten it removed. You don't keep a Nazi tattoo unless you want it.

Raskin with Jeffries: "It's an alarming situation where now we have many of these January 6 defendants who have been picked up on other defenses. The Department of Justice is not zealously prosecuting them for other crimes they have committed ... it's a very dangerous situation."
If you're going to do edgy or irreverent satire, at least do it right.

I got punished and misunderstood for so many untreated ADHD symptoms; for years I internalized the guilt for failure. It's no wonder I had depression and anxiety.

For the first time I'm giving myself forgiveness.

"How do you expect to win over white people if you won't excuse racism?"

Y'all sound crazy.
Graham Platner to @daveweigel.bsky.social:
"How do you expect to win back men when you go back through somebody’s Reddit history and just pull it all out and say: β€˜Oh, my God, this person has no right to ever be in politics?’"

DSCC Chair Gillibrand: β€œIt’s up to the voters of Maine to decide.”

That's what I was thinking. He also didn't think to cover or remove the Nazi tattoo before considering *running for politics*.
Surely there's candidates other than this asshole.

What are ethics anymore? What are laws?

There's both sides to this, you see.

On the one hand, Trump *could* potentially be violating ethics when using his power as president to extort his own Justice Department. But on the other hand, Trump will sue us if we report with certainty that he violated any ethics or laws.
