Most departments don't have crisis plans. Most universities do.

Most crisis plans protect the university and not (or at the expense of) employees.

This is a MAJOR HOLE in #SciComm advocacy.

Data on this are scattered, but here's some to start with:

Researchers who have been doxxed for their academic work have been shouting this for years: we need a plan to protect ourselves from concerted, politically motivated attacks on individuals. We need this at the grassroots level, at the departmental level, at the institutional level.

This is just my opinion, but I don't think departments need to change their strategy for reading or grading student work.

Departments need a strategy for responding to harassment and attacks.

We need to know who is vulnerable among us and how we can protect them so they can continue to do their work with integrity.

This is not a "grading essays on controversial topics" problem.

This is a "protecting our colleagues from bad actors" problem.

COPA, a bill that will let community land trusts have first dibs on bidding on distressed properties, is poised for a breakthrough with the city council, 5 yrs after it was first proposed. Now the city's housing agency is on board.

NYC follows SF and DC, which have similar laws.

Does the TA have a support network? Is it even possible to contact her in a caring way when she is undergoing mass harassment and institutional betrayal? It feels like very few academics give a shit about that, and perhaps that’s why you’re doomed.

Here’s a novel idea: what if we discussed how to support the TA while she’s going through this. How do we help an academic worker who is being institutionally thrown under the bus and actively harassed for doing her job because of who she is?

It sucks that meeting a new class now involves not just going over the syllabus, setting expectations, and trying to establish a rapport, but also trying to deduce whether any of your new students are vigilante right wing operatives out to seek viral controversy at the expense of your job
If you are a chair of a department or supervise grad students, it might be important to collaborate with your colleagues on ways to strategize when a "problem essay" comes down the pike. It's one small way of protecting each other.

"the essay sucks ass" is no doubt true, couldn't be bothered to read it, but consider that the essay may have been written to receive an F in order to instigate a campaign against the trans TA. in any case it's not a great dunk because this isn't about the essay, it's about purging trans ppl

People who have experienced the worst humanity has to offer are often the ones who struggle with this the most. Complex trauma lies to us about who is to blame.
