A tale as old as time:

It turns out, building something is the easy part.

Building something people want? That’s the real challenge.

AI coding tools blur the lines between PMs and engineers. PMs can ship code, devs can make product calls.

But when boundaries dissolve, people can feel threatened, jealousy, protectionism...

Chatted with @jordangal.bsky.social and @briancasel.com on @thepanel.bsky.social about all of this.

Such a good episode. AI (and AI development in particular) is disrupting the culture, process, and fundamentals of many companies. How is your business responding to all of this?

Had my first "@briancasel.com is a celebrity" moment today.

Went for lunch with a friend I haven't seen in 6 months.

Start talking about AI (naturally), and I say: "Yeah, my friend Brian is really into this..."

He's like, "Wait, you know Brian Casel?!? I've been watching his YouTube videos!"

In the AI age, marketing gets a lot harder, because there will be way more people announcing stuff: new features, new products, new shows, new projects. There will be a huge increase in noise (way more posts).

Standing out will be more important than ever (and way harder).

In conclusion: A big chunk of "look at the data" advice is (a) coming from naive and inexperienced armchair quarterbacks and (b) a coping mechanism to avoid having to actually make your own decisions.

This shit is hard, and you can't do it without boatloads of intuition and personal conviction.

"For devs, the AI vibe really shifted over the Christmas break."

(This is what I noticed as well: a big shift in attitude towards AI happened during the holiday)

AI, algos... everything's moving so fast.

But while everything's moving faster, some fundamentals are truer than ever.

The highest-value algorithm is *still* word of mouth: humans telling their friends about stuff they like.

Make something people love so much, they tell their friends.

They say AI is the end for developers.
They say the job market is gone.
They say learning to code is pointless.

I don’t buy it.

I think we're just getting started.

Your best marketing and selling will happen at the intersection of what’s natural and joyful for you, and where your customers already congregate and look for answers.

If that intersection is empty, that might mean you’re not the right person to execute this strategy.
