Over 100 years ago, the last person to be hanged in Vermont was a man convicted of a murder in Wallingford, Vermont. It was just one of a number of killings in the quaint New England town.

I'm switching my blog over to Substack. Past content from Vermont When's not going anywhere, but all future articles will be posted at Substack, which you can access through this link.
Elizabeth Blackwell: How Vermont almost claimed America’s first female M.D.
Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female MD, almost started her medical journey in Castleton, Vermont -- if only the acceptance letter had arrived in time!

In early 1813, 6,000 Vermonters died over the course of five months. My latest 'Remember When' column

The last of Vermont's poor farms didn't close until the 1960s.

A repost of an article from a couple of years ago, now on my blog, Vermont When.

With a hope of heaven, the fear of the poorhouse
Vermont’s poor houses and farms were “the last word in disgrace and for the aged, the poor, the diseased, the insane, and the crippled to be sent there was almost like receiving a death sentence.”

Here's a piece I wrote last year about Mary Jane, a #Vermont -born Black woman who died in the Rutland Poor House and whose story was almost lost to history.

I had intended my Bluesky timeline to be a politics-free zone but that's not possible when I'm primarily following writers and historians. They're the ones trying to record the truth of what's happening out here (and thank God for that!).

Why does submitting my work (for possible publication or a contest) never fail to make me feel like throwing up? Or crawling under the covers and never coming out?

A re-post of a holiday-themed "Remember When" article, "When the Holidays Were a Ball."
 The 19th Century Holiday Ball
The holidays were a particularly popular time for dances. And in a time of rapid industrial growth, the expanding middle-class was eager to enjoy the kind of fun previously afforded only to the Old Rich.

My latest "Remember When" column: In 1908, as his brother was actively searching for him, a Civil War veteran named Charles died alone in the Rutland jail.

How did one ever write #historicalfiction before the internet? I just Googled "weather Vermont September 1905" and discovered it was *not* a nice, warm day like I'd written, but a damp 50 degrees following a chilly, wet summer. #themoreyouknow #thelongerittakestowritethedamnbook

Putting this here so I can find it again. So far I have found birth certs for all the relatives I've needed to, but there's always more family to look for!

I appear to have many Brits in my Follows because I'm seeing references to #thearchers. As an ex-pat, this name immediately stirs memories of the complete silence required by Mum when it came the radio.

Omg, this looks amazing! (And just what I needed... *another* research tool to become utterly obsessed with!)

How long would your commute take in 1680? Mine would be about a day and a half.

OK, I know it's totally cheating since I began writing this 50,000 words for #nanowrimo *last* year, but seeing the "Congratulations!" confetti flutter down my screen just now totally made my day! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

I'm writing a middle chapter I've been avoiding & wrote something about my main character's cat. She didn't have a cat before, but that cat wanted in, so I guess l'll be revising the whole book now. I don't make the rules 👑😺
