The United States military swears loyalty to the Constitution, not to any political party or leader.

Anyone in a position of power giving orders to the military to use force against American citizens is a fascist and must be opposed by those still loyal to the Constitution.

"What should we be doing now to ensure that our city remains a decent city for people not yet born?" As hard as it is to look up from our immediate troubles, I believe that such questions are worth asking & discussing. I'm flattered to have been invited to be on this panel at MIT tomorrow evening.

Assuming that the nor'easter will allow me to get off the island of Martha's Vineyard tomorrow (that is, if the ferries resume running), inshallah I'll be on this panel tomorrow evening. If you're in the Boston/Cambridge area, I hope to see you there. If not, I hope you'll read my essay, maybe?

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy passed away today according to the House of GG. She was a veteran of the Stonewall rebellion and a lifelong organizer for the safety and dignity of trans people, sex workers, and the incarcerated. She came from the same generation and milieu as Marsha and Sylvia. She was 78.

Amen. These heartless, bigoted, child-hating, misogynistic, ignorant, vain, cruel, hypocritical, rich, entitled bullies control the Presidency, the House of Representatives & the Senate. It's their fucking mess. Let them find a way out. In the name of God and the USA, do not lend them a hand.

Republicans have majorities in both houses of Congress, so they can end the impasse any time they want, all on their own. This shutdown reveals a much deeper dysfunction, to which blame can be wholly attached to Trump and his GOP enablers. trib.al/4RMmelX

Israel is retaining control of 58% of the Gaza Strip, including the majority of its farmland in eastern Gaza.

Western Gaza was largely built on top of sand dunes, as you can see from the aerial image in the post below.
ISRAEL'S WAR ON GAZA
Israel's withdrawal to the 'yellow line'
In the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan, Israel is set to withdraw its troops to the agreed 'yellow line' within 24 hours, after which a 72-hour period will begin for the handover of Israeli captives.

Israel retains control of 58%
of the Gaza Strip

This aerial image from the 1960s shows that the 'yellow line' of Israel's redeployment in Gaza is roughly matching with the border of the area's coastal sand dune, leaving Gaza without the absolute majority of its agricultural areas on the fertile soils in the east.

This is correct, in part - as the grim, military historian in me feels the need to note - it is psychologically much harder to get soldiers to open fire on people they view as 'respectable.'

And I dread, with grim increasingly certainty, that we are headed to a point where that matters.

protests against this government should include white Boomer grandmothers who meet for pilates class, get a pitcher of mimosas & walk together to the public space

we need people in the street who think everyone can talk their way out of a speeding ticket, they're key to winning

There is a great deal of dick-wagging going on.

In prosecutors' bid for a protective order, they cited this case (as if to suggest Comey's single video was worse than 100 tweets from the President).

law.justia.com/cases/federa...
On the same day of Harris' indictment, the Assistant United States Attorney assigned to the case, James B. Comey ("Comey"), sent Morrissey a copy of the indictment and a copy of Local Rule 57. Comey felt the need to remind Morrissey of the applicability of Local Rule 57 because Morrissey had a reputation for aggressive use of the media in high-profile cases, and because comments similar to the ones that Morrissey had previously made during the state proceedings would be prohibited in federal court under this rule.

On the morning of February 11, 1997, John Honey ("Honey"), counsel for another potential witness against Harris, called Morrissey to caution him against approaching Honey's client directly for an interview. In that conversation, Morrissey indicated that he had scheduled a press conference for later that afternoon and planned to show the videotape of Buerkley recanting his grand jury testimony. Morrissey also told Bates and Buerkley's attorney Augustus Hydrick ("Hydrick") about the planned press conference. Both Hydrick and Bates discouraged Morrissey from holding the press conference for fear it would jeopardize their chances to convince any other witnesses to talk to them. Hydrick testified that Morrissey said he needed to do this in order to send a message to the other witnesses. Comey also found out about the press conference and faxed Morrissey a letter that again cited Local Rule 57 and urged him to cancel the press conference.

Morrissey went ahead with the press conference. He made some remarks, presented a press release, and played the videotape of Buerkley's recantation. The press conference received extensive media coverage throughout the Richmond area.

Later that afternoon, Morrissey responded to Comey's letter claiming that he had discussed Local Rule 57 with three former prosecutors and, based on their conversations, decided to hold the press conference. Later, during the show cause hearings, the three attorneys Morrissey spoke with all deni…

Sure sure. Like @joshgerstein.bsky.social, I'm experiencing deja vu with the Libby reference.

But my fav part of Fitz' response to Lindsey the Insurance Lawyer's sloppy bid for a protective order is this footnote, catching LTIL's attempt to pull a fast one

storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
Protective orders addressing the confidentiality and privacy interests of
others should not override a defendant’s right to a fair trial. See United States v. O'Keefe, No. CRIM. 06-0249 (PLF), 2007 WL 1239204, at *2 (D.D.C. Apr. 27,
2007)(citing United States v. Libby, 453 F.Supp.2d 35, 37 (D.D.C.2006) (discussing
procedures under the Classified Information Procedures Act)) In the original version of the protective order that the government provided to
defense counsel, it allowed for this permission to be sought ex parte. Therefore, the
defense did not perceive this provision to be in dispute. It was unexpected that it
was omitted in the government’s filed copy.

Interesting phrasing here. Subsidies did not magically “become more generous.” The American Rescue Plan of 2021, which every Republican in Congress voted against, expanded these subsidies thanks to Congressional Democrats and President Biden, who signed it into law.
Since subsidies became more generous in 2021, overall enrollment has more than tripled in six red states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and West Virginia.
