If you've walked on this special part of the world you'll have Penguin Memories for life. For one, they're a little stinky. They're also awkward on land, but in water they immediately transform into sleek, graceful torpedoes. These young Adélie penguins, identifiable by the distinctive white ring around their eyes. They are standing on a rocky, snow-dusted shore. The curiosity is mutual. Antarctica Day, December 1, commemorates the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959. The treaty sets forth strict guidelines to protect the very important ecosystem of the Antarctic Continent. Today, China and Norway routinely ignore the treaty, scooping up tons, upon tons of Krill. Krill is the building block of pretty much the entire food chain, shrimp and other crustations depend on it, as do penguins and whales.

Looking down and over the railing of our expedition ship into the rippled water of the bay. Reflections of the chiselled peaks can be seen in the water, decorated with scattered ice flowing through it. The landscape is stunningly harsh, although it's beaty and warmth radiate all around …or it could be that it's Valentines Day. The Allt Coire na Banachdich threads its way though rocky banks. It's flanked by pasture and its golden grass and green shrubbery. Fences on either side of the small waterfall serve as out-of-bounds markers for the sheep, which we met down on the road. The sunlit mountains are capped with moving, white clouds that reveal blue skies. It's not the longest hike that we will do on Skye, but it's the most intimate. Our Innkeeper recommend a few hikes, all were uncrowded, local gems. Solitude has been a rare commodity while travelling just about everywhere.

A rocky beach can be seen along the shore of the peninsula about half-way down. There are also large rock formations rising from the water in the foreground. A pink flamingo stands on a pebbled beach at the edge of a lagoon while others in the flock are trolling the bottom of the rippled, green water. There is yellow-green vegetation growing up the bank on the far side. The lagoon is fed by Rio Grande, which isn't very grand, but obviously stocks this shallow lagoon with plenty of food. It's a random site as there's nothing much on route, and the several dozen flamingos appear.

Pío XI Glacier caught mid-calve. Drones may provide a bird's eye view, but rockin' in its wake, in a small boat 100 feet away is far more interactive. It's a day of clam seas and dry, grey-ish skies. The blue ice provides a stunning pop of colour. There's a sea bird (gull) in the middle of the action. Patagonia weather is changeable, three seasons per day.
