I completely agree that the details of his plans were standard Republican fare. But he was also repeatedly saying things in public like promising to raise his own taxes or giving everyone better health care coverage to confuse the issue for less engaged voters. Or just, y'know, morons like Dowd.

Even if it was completely innocent - if Trump puts up a judge with a large nazi tattoo, do we want to be able to take the moral high ground and say that's unacceptable or not? Look no further than the GOP texts: If we don't draw a line at nazi tattoos RIGHT FUCKING NOW we will regret it very soon.

The only thing Republicans didn't like about Byrd was that he stopped supporting them after opposing the VRA and became a Democrat. If he was a Trump appointee exposed as a KKK member today then JD Vance would go out and yell at you for caring about minutiae.
