Hawthorne Bridge in Portland, Oregon. No kings!
In Sep, my fiancé and I jumped through several hoops to get COVID/flu shots before traveling overseas. Was worth it. She had sniffles and tested positive for COVID when we got home but wasn’t sick for more than a day or two. I felt the immune response next day. Lasted a few hrs w/ no other symptoms.

Yesterday: Trump bragged, "We took the freedom of speech away."

Today: New reporting on Trump's plans to go after opposition groups.

In 9 days: We mount the largest peaceful protest in modern history to say, loud and clear, that America has no king.

As a resident of #Portland it is impossible to capture how unhinged this is. We are a low crime city and the ICE protest "siege" consists of one auxiliary ICE office that normally has at most a dozen weirdos debating what performance art they should use to block a single driveway

Not downplaying what Trump and MAGA are doing. At all.

But also worth noting that the adjunctification of academia helped pave the road that Trump and MAGA are now driving on.
If anyone is wondering what it’s like to get a COVID vaccine in Oregon this year, my dr had to write a prescription, & I was quizzed about my high risk condition. At the appointment, the pharmacist found a problem with the prescription and cancelled the jab. RFK calls this access. Try again tomorrow
Clearly concerned that he was armed with an entire sandwich platter.

My perspective is limited to undergrad history & soc science grad training. History is definitely its own specialty with different methods BUT it sure would be nice if every social science major required a couple of history classes. Hard to interpret social science data w/o contextual understanding.

I just can’t believe our Reichstag Fire is the Big Balls Beatdown.
Smoked a cigarette with Patrick Swayze on the tarmac in front of my break room while he waited for his Southwest Airlines flight to arrive. Super nice guy. (I quit smoking in 2006.)
The Manhattan Project. Obviously.

I weirdly can’t break the habit of typing two spaces after a period, but now I have control-H to revert to single space as my final edit.

Harvard sociologist/polisci Theda Skocpol explains how the vast expansion of ICE in BBB may be Trump's secret weapon to overcome the barriers of federalism and complete his autocratic takeover of the American state. (History from Germany & Hungary in 20s/30s.) talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/criti...

Justice Antonin Scalia joined in the majority opinion in Texas v Johnson.
Texas v Johnson: “We do not consecrate the flag by punishing its desecration, for in doing so we dilute the freedom that this cherished emblem represents.” This is one of the strongest notions of the First Amendment—the idea that symbols of freedom are worth more when allowed to be insulted, burned.
Trump: "People that burn the American flag should go to jail for one year ... we're working with some of your senators."
