"Mr. Engel is one of the more competent attorneys who appears in ths Court..."

-- Judge to my court appointed client who had filed a motion requesting different counsel
"We have top men working on it right now."

"Who?"

"Top... men."
Amazing turnout to save democracy in ruby-red Clinton County, Ohio

Good job, Quakers

My school - founded by polymath, bifocal-wearing, hardened glass-harmonica-playing, "76-and-I'll-Still-Kick-Your-Ass," Poor-Richard's-Almanack-writin', Benjamin Fuckin' Franklin - should never fold to anyone
Can we include the contract extension for Charlie “decided schematic advantage" Weiss at ND as part of the argument for Belichick being the worst?
Gotta disagree with suggestion he “was and is a good coach”

Context does matter,, and evidence in context suggests Belichick is just a replacement level coach who successfully leveraged a combination of lucking into a generational quarterback and cheating into an undeserved “genius” label
The word “flirty” is doing a lot of work in that sentence
Do paid ads really represent the preference of progressive donors?

The more likely explanation for what is described is that consultants who run PACs make commission money from paid ads, so steer donations in that direction
My hope for every baseball season — since I had weekend season tickets in the Fenway centerfield bleachers in the 90s — is to see meaningful baseball games at the end of September and into October

We get that gift and simply say: Dayenu
Also, I don't remember that show, Teen Woll?

I bet it was awesome, though!
New York Times AGAIN spreading false information

This time: a claim to have the "best" recipes for breaking the Yom Kippur fast

The truth: EVERYONE knows that the only acceptable way for an American Jew to break the fast is with Chinese food.

I swear to god if Democrats do not get a hold of their text fundraising mayhem…
Mistake to focus on Trump when the real problem is SCOTUS

Constitution was deigned for Courts to be an anti-Democratic check on the inevitable over-reach of the executive and legislative branches in order to protect individual liberty

Reestablishment of this historic role needs to be primary focus
Eagles missed a real opportunity by not having a message printed on shades being held up on sideline

My brother suggested “Your city isn’t even Jacksonville”

I would go with “Brady cheated”

Josh is in to something important here 👇

How the law is understood and experienced by “elite” professors and the Supreme Court Bar is different than how trial lawyers and judges understand the law; power-based jurisprudence has real negative impacts on the people that SCOTUS never sees
6/ and realize, admit that reform is necessary. But quite a few still persist making excuses for the current corruption as though it were a matter of differing judicial philosophies etc. In a way it's professional self-preservation because if the work of the legal judicial/academic system isn't ...
The current Court’s corruption is tied to the abandonment of idea that courts are anti-democratic checks and not another expression of political power

Much of this can be accomplished legislatively through laws creating and clarifying private rights of action and remedies
Correct observation that this Court has demolished the credibility of scholars who maintain that that current Court is principled

This is in many ways unique to SCOTUS, as lawyers and lower court judges still try to follow “the law” — need to find a way to re-empower that approach
I can report from personal experience that being your own boss is fantastic and it’s true what they say: Keep doing great work and more work will find you

Wishing you every success in the new year; Hurrah for the Red and the Blue
Interesting interim question will be whether defense can get discovery on the issue of selective prosecution, including possible disclosure of transcript of grand jury proceedings

Courts usually don't allow, but here there may be enough specific facts, not mere allegations, to support claim

Just like with PBS pledge drives, I am waiting till the matching period next week to donate to The Otis Fund at @katmaiconservancy.bsky.social
Giving Cruz too much credit

His criticism was not based on principled defense of free speech, but on a practical “they might do it to me” view

I know Cruz was taught otherwise in law school: free expression is an independent value tied to the essential humanity of every individual
The worst part of being a foster parent to a lizard is when I have to buy live crickets

The friendly folks at the store ask, "so what are you feeding?"

I have to fight the urge to say, "do I look like the kind of guy who would own a lizard??"
Our daughter has a lizard which she left for me to feed live crickets when she went away to college, which means we have a cage with live crickets on top of the refrigerator

Pretty gross

My mother refuses to sleep in the "lizard room" when she comes to visit

But that's not the worst part...
Not 'doomerism' to have less confidence that it's "unlikely" he will "get this sham past many layers of courts and a jury"

Many lawyers still adhere to the law, but not all, as J. Eddins in Hawaii wrote: the Supreme Court is willing to "repackage and whitewash facts to achieve a desired outcome"
TBD whether legal system in general, and lawyers in particular, will actually be effective in creating institutional barriers

Seems to be no shortage of attorneys willing to risk their bar licenses to make arguments that previously were seen as unethical or frivolous on behalf of administration
