Going to start a #BuildInPublic dev thread for my Sly Cooper #PebbleOS watchface. I started it as part of the 2nd @rebble.io Hackathon, and I’ll share some updates of what’s been going on so far as part of this thread so that I can look back at it if I want, and people can follow along if they want

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.
We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

the roll out age verification in the UK has clearly been devastating (clear examples of censorship & discrimination, & they’re scanning young people’s faces) but if platforms are also now blocking VPN workarounds that’s the end of the ability to “freely travel” online

The Minnesota shooter apparently used data broker websites to find the home addresses of the people he shot and murdered.

Congress has had years to do something about data brokers and they've sided with the tech lobby over and over again.

Their inaction is deadly.

The internet is an essential public utility and should be treated as such.

Fiber networks should be (a) municipally owned, (b) funded by bonds and repaid by subscriber fees/dues, (c) leased to many different ISPs to ensure the lowest prices possible.

It works. That is all.

The tariffs have just led an innovative U.S. company to scale back sales of its own goods in its home market. Who does this help? What sort of “medicine” is this?
Due to the new tariffs that came into effect on April 5th, we’re temporarily pausing US sales of a few of our base Framework Laptop 13 systems (Ultra 5 125H and Ryzen 5 7640U).

For now, these models will be removed from our US site.

We will continue to provide updates as we have them.

This is inaccurate. There is no known vulnerability with Signal's core tech. The memo was discussing phishing attempts, which Signal has worked to mitigate. And it was hastily reported.

It's important not to spread misinfo that can confuse people into moving away from meaningfully private comms.
In case you missed it: the Pentagon--that's Hegseth--got warned about using Signal a week ago.

It's really crucial to understand how badly framed this is. There is no Signal vulnerability. The Pentagon email did a bad job explaining a Google report from a month ago and NPR repeated it.

This is like saying because you got a phishing email at your Gmail address, there's a Google vulnerability.
News: NPR’s Tom Bowman reports of a Pentagon-wide warning about Signal’s security vulnerability - one week ago 👇🏼

Right now there are a lot of new eyes on Signal, and not all of them are familiar with secure messaging and its nuances. Which means there’s misinfo flying around that might drive people away from Signal and private communications. 1/

The #Rebble and #Pebble community hosted a hackathon last week. I made a Sly Cooper watchface for it. It's based on the "Thief Meter" (health bar) from Sly 2 and 3. I plan on continuing to work on it, but for now it has a picture of Sly, shows the date in addition to the time, and the battery life

Elon Musk never really open sourced the X algorithm, let alone kept it open source.

He had his employees upload some of the code but it was never complete and didn't reveal how they actually used it in production.

I'm really beginning to think he's a bit of a hypocrite.

Forcing users to accept a single algorithm is bad.

Having it be closed source is even worse.

The reason TikTok, X, and Meta keep their algorithms secret is not because they contain magic AI technology.

It's because they don't want anyone to see the control they're exerting over society.

This came up in the context of orgs setting subdomains for their members.

There ARE effects to doing that. Web links to your profile or posts depend on your username.

But I did want to make it very clear, it only affects your username. An org-given username does not hand over control beyond that.

@myke.social listening to connected and you mentioning the issue with your Bluesky URL. You can add a redirect so if someone types myke.social into their web browser it’ll go to your Bluesky account. (Looks like that’s your mastodon server, you might be able to do bluesky.myke.social)
For custom domain handles, you can add a CNAME for "bsky.dianna.social" -> "redirect.bsky.app" and it will redirect to your profile.
Experimental feature for those comfortable with DNS, you can set your domain to be a CNAME of `redirect.bsky.app` and we'll redirect your domain to your bsky profile URL.

Disclaimer: this is an experimental feature and may be removed if we run into problems with it, but hopefully not!

💡 Tip: You can set your website as your username on Bluesky!

This is one form of self-verification, and we especially encourage official organizations and brands to do this! Examples include @npr.org @react.dev @duolingobrasil.com.br.

if you want to chat about something sensitive, you can use Bluesky DMs to exchange contact info, but I would recommend moving the conversation to Signal.

Bluesky DMs are private, but they are not (yet) E2EE. Signal is hardened, focused, and does privacy/security best.
