Oh, hey! I wrote that one.
My favorite quest in Outer Worlds 2 is when you help a group of completely milquetoast middle managers try and find dirt on executives - and they have no idea what to do with it. Peak Obsidian.

I’m kinda glad to see big companies finally getting more comfortable with handing the keys to their big franchises to cool indie devs with a proven track record. Castlevania by Motion Twin, God of War by Mega Cat. Smart! The New Hollywood games moment is perhaps here, baby!

I maintain that this is the moment a lot of folks realise that they can just do direct deals with porting houses and marketing teams.

Publishers got used to low risk thanks to platform deals and crowdfunding. They need to remember that ‘absorbs risk’ is their primary non-replaceable role tout suite
"we shouldn't have to work for free on a game until it's nearly-done enough to get funding" and "it's the only thing you can really do so you should do it if you want to make games" are both true imo and it's shit but what else is there really to do that isn't just give up

Almost 80 hours later and I finally finished my first run of the Outer Worlds 2.
Lots of lessons learnt and things to do differently on the second playthrough, but all in all it was a fantastic sequel, and incredibly enjoyable to play.

The Outer Worlds-verse runs the risk of being too cynical by half, which is...not exactly what the world needs right now. But 2 stays on the right side of the line and allows you to be cringe and earnest, while rewarding you for your faith that better things are possible.

Like ALL of them.

I got to say "Systems will fix it" today during a meeting with our lead combat designer and after all the times I've heard "Narrative will fix it," it was really nice.

Sorry for anyone who didn't bother to learn Spanish in high school but is now mad that they don't understand it. It was right there dude. It's not some secret code being kept from you.

It's fine not to know stuff but don't expect the world to revolve around just the things you choose to know.

Ultimately right now in video games I feel surrounded by people who are worried, all the time, about long-term unemployment and ensuing social (or actual) death and so if you seem very invested in coming up with fun uses for LLMs in games I find you despicable.

This master craftsman’s work has lit up everything from Bond to Blade Runner 2049. But as he publishes his memoir, why does he believe the artform he made his name in is in such decline?

My piping hot take on PLURIBUS is that it’s one of the most Ghibli-esque shows on TV today, and people who think its pacing is too slow ought to really sit with and examine why they feel that slow pace = bad.

Its first season has several minutes worth of “mā”, and is much stronger for it, IMO

I may delete this because it’s a bit spicy but it shouldn’t be lost on us that games being turned into TV is essentially harvesting the stories written by those who don’t have union representation or healthcare with WGA by those that do. Our stories are good enough for TV but the writers aren’t?
