On this date, Matthew Shephard died 27 years ago. He was beaten, tortured, and left for dead on fence for being gay. Please keep him and his wonderful mother Judy in your thoughts. And let's all work for a world where such horrific things do not happen to anyone. ❤️🏳️‍🌈

“In a devastating blow to the Jewish community, Nazi Germany revokes the passports of all Jewish citizens, effectively stripping them of their citizenship and freedom to travel. This..is a calculated attempt to isolate & persecute Jews, making it impossible for them to escape..”

No wonder people have distanced themselves from him. Piece of shit.

As some might have realised, the 400mm f5.6 is getting a run out at the moment. What a fantastic lens. Dead chuffed.

I find it amusing when people diss #Bluesky. My experience is that it is what you make it. What people call its self-righteousness is, for me, the result of blocking X-types trying to import their issues. If I use block lists & block others, it is a nice place to hang out, with some great people.
explaintrade.com
This is an exact encapsulation of why I moved to Bluesky.

No amount of handwringing in the Atlantic about how I owe some eternal Promethean suffering to the discourse is going to make me stay on a site I hate, that stopped doing anything for me professionally years ago.
Well – no. Bluesky may or may not be, as one centre-right friend who felt unwelcome put it, “self-righteous island”. But the idea that’s why we went is nonsense. That I’ve largely stopped posting on a site that’s done more to shape my career and social circle than the rest of the internet combined is less about avoiding rival opinions (I love arguing with people who are wrong!) than with the fact the site simply became unusable. It stopped generating the things (good jokes, interesting debate, clicks) I wanted; it became extremely good at generating the things (racists, pornbots, racist pornbots) I did not.

The university I work at it is literally encircled by England flags targeted sometimes implicitly and sometimes very explicitly at students of colour. I wonder why that isn’t part of the discussion about “keeping universities free from hate”? (I don’t actually wonder this).
flyingrodent.bsky.social
That’s the line and by Christ, they are sticking to it come hell or high water. Let’s see whether it’ll work as well on e.g. Italian police arresting them at a holiday villa outside Rimini in 2033.

Hate has no place in our universities or our country.
Antisemitism must be rooted out of our society.
Our education system must play its part in keeping us free from fear and free from hate.

This is such a clever idea on taking kids to museums/galleries
www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...
Nadia from London has an idea that sounds such fun you'll be booking a day out asap.
"I've always loved museums," she says,
"but they can be overwhelming for children. For decades now, I've done something called 'playing postcards'
We do
the museum backwards, visiting the gift shop first. Each child gets to choose three postcards. Then they take it in turns to find that particular artwork in the museum and give us a little information about the piece from the details on the postcard, or from any gallery plaque. At the end of this treasure-hunt-style activity, we vote for our favourite in the cafe."

The willing embrace of it by people within universities who know that it has nothing to do with teaching but everything to do with three metrics—dropout rates, NSS, & employment stats—that it can control (or try to control in terms of NSS), without lying, tells you all you need to know about TEF.
jlyons1991.bsky.social
Except TEF isn‘t about teaching at all. It is a weak-assed set of measurements coopted by people too lacking in energy & talent to create something that bears some relation to teaching. Did I mention I was present at a uni open day talk where it was falsely claimed that TEF inspected facilities?

My review of The Fraud, Paul Holden's explosive new book

"Holden’s book shows the contempt with which senior Labour figures around Keir Starmer hold not just the left, but also truth, decency and the law."

jlyons1991.bsky.social
Totally agree. Just worried about how realistic it is to believe that this is in any way sustainable. Would people still want these jobs a few years down the line?
jlyons1991.bsky.social
“Starmer, for example, pretended to be “the heir to Corbynism”, with his leadership campaign’s “10 Pledges” in 2020. But these had almost entirely vanished before the 2024 election, as had his commitment to party unity, democratic MP selections and an end to factionalism.”

Not “pretended”, lied.

Belatedly reading about this and as always really important to remind people in *every breath* that when the right talks about “woke” and “DEI” they are talking about the cultural and political wins of the civil rights movement. This arrangement existed for 52 years because of historical activism.

So glad to not be involved in universities any more. A sector surrounded and led by largely bad faith actors, ugh…

Except the student has to pay and be in debt for forty years. What a waste.
