I was disappointed with Yglesias’s vapid, unfounded, and immoral screed in the NYTs suggesting that American progressives embrace the domestic oil & gas industry. I hope @seancasten.bsky.social turns this spot-on thread into a rebuttal piece for the NY Times.

This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

It’s the entire point. There’s no plan to make this meaningful for students. No plan to use it administratively. Its design and implementation signals its only real intent. It’s best and easiest use case is for systematic harassment and to scare faculty into complying in advance.

Rob Reiner was one of the key people behind the effort to go to court to overturn California's anti-marriage equality Proposition 8 when it passed in 2008.

Working with Chad Griffin, they founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights and got Ted Olson and David Boies to team up to fight Prop 8.

1. Cars are the biggest source of climate pollution in the country.

2. Transportation is the biggest household expense after rent/mortgage.

2. State and local gov't could cut these numbers by about 25% in five years without any federal policy.

Agents in Key Largo, Florida ripped this woman wearing medical scrubs out of her car as she screamed she is a US citizen. Agents cuffed her and put her in one of their cars.

She was eventually let go, per David Goodhue of the Miami Herald, who also took this footage:

On this day in 1865, the state of North Carolina ratified the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime.

Of the 36 states at the time, 27 were needed to ratify the Amendment. North Carolina was the 26th. Just two days later, on December 6th, Georgia became the 27th state to ratify the 13th Amendment. The people held as slaves throughout the U.S. were legally free two weeks later.
