This is why I live in Chicago. I want four distinct seasons with weather. If you don’t like snow, there are so many other places you can live in the US. I never understood the complainers.

I’m so sad to read this - Bruce was so kind to me when I was a young staffer at the Trib and he was edit board editor.
Thank you to whoever scheduled this snowstorm in Chicago it has been an utter delight and I’ll take at least 5 more this winter please.

Last night my family bussed and walked through the storm. It was a delight to come across a man on a 2x4 plowing his block- we could do this in every Chicago ward! Sign me up!!
It boggles my mind that some winter cities clear roads but not sidewalks. It’s an enormous middle finger to pedestrians (ESPECIALLY strollers, wheelchairs, etc.) and indicator of car-centric thinking.
It doesn’t have to be like that! There are plows that can clear sidewalks! Here’s one in Ottawa.

When I lived in Seattle they did this in the downtown area and it turned the bus into a moving homeless shelter. I’m not totally against the idea- but this was my experience when you remove the barrier to entry.
Iowa City's free bus program has been so successful in reducing congestion and pollution, the City decided to re-up it.

I’ve saved over $200k by never owning a car. By living in a city and making biking a priority. It is a life changing amount of money for most people.
Transportation costs are the second largest burden on American family budgets (17%), after housing (33%)!
To address the affordability crisis, we must create cities with abundant housing of all types (subsidized, social, coop, market rate) and make walking, biking, and taking transit convenient.
