In the past an author truly had authority over the story. We are so used to commenting and engaging in a dialogue with media online that some people struggle to take in a work passively

My least favourite thing to manage in a drawing class is a student who spends more time writing "this sucks" "bad drawing" "I will never figure out how to draw feet" in the margins of their page, than actually try to draw.

It's like they gave up before they started

I always feel weird about that movie. It's very well constructed, and the framing device of an old cowboy Pulp anthology is a fun conceit, but they decided to port the depiction of indigenous peoples in those original stories whole cloth with no attempt to subvert or reflect

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
