HeyWitch! shop update is on its way! I didn't mean to overlap with all the Big Sale stuff, so I might do more posts about this than usual to make sure it doesn't get lost in the shuffle. Here's the newsletter about it to start (feat. important shipping info):

Last night I learned how enduring the Where the Red Fern Grows trauma is when I watched the hound class of the national dog show & uncontrollably whispered, “nooooo,” when the announcer said that the Redbone Coonhound can be used to track mountain lions 👍 IYKYK

Something ancient and wonderful for the weekend! 🤩

The world’s oldest known sculpture of a horse!

This tiny figurine was carved from mammoth ivory by an Ice Age artist some 40,000 years ago!

I also had to draw them before I ran out of steam for the week :) I feel like these pals might end up becoming sculptures as well 👀

I did a deep dive into the Luttrell Psalter (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luttrel...), the place a lot of my favourite Medieval inspiration-beasts come from, and this trio of weirdos that came out of it delights me SO MUCH?! Perhaps my fav marginalia mug yet?!??

This.

Whenever local government reviews the library budget and asks, "Why should we give you money?"

We want the library to be able to say, "Because we provide a valuable service used by many people!"

Libraries are like muscles, using them more makes them stronger. 💪
Anybody who is like “Piracy is activism!”—trust me, supporting your local library is about 1000% more effective activism, and it’s still free for you and authors still get paid!

Handing back student work that’s been written by ChatGPT with a 0 followed by the comment “This essay will never stand in authentic wonder before the Beauty of God’s creation.”
Pope Leo XIV told students not to use artificial intelligence for homework, saying that AI ‘won’t stand in authentic wonder before the beauty of God’s creation.’

I've seen people say that getting attached to ChatGPT is like "believing the stripper really loves you", but that's not true. It's more like believing that the dryer personally composed that little jingle on a lonely sockless night just to win your affections.

Hey Ottawa folks: I gave some kids' books to Twice Upon a Time and they said they've receved fewer donations than usual for this time of year. So if you have any kids' books in good condition, or time or money to spare, here's the info:

Just got home from Wicked For Good & had a lovely time, but I’ve gotta say the highlight was the row of people behind us who audibly swooned & giggled every time Jonathan Bailey appeared on screen (I get it, group of friends!! That guy knows how to smoulder as a romantic lead!)

…and for pottery, partner got me a wheel class at a local studio, I touched clay, fell in love, took a creature-handbuilding class with another local artist, went OOPS OBSESSED NOW, hobby gradually became part of my job!

Did a whole bachelors in English thinking I’d be an editor or journalist, ended up working at non-profits in comms for 4yrs, dabbled in designing some event flyers (while doing more art in my spare time), went OOPS time for more school (another bachelors) in design/illustration this time 🤷‍♀️

The two toads I finished today (ok, one of them is inspired by pacman frogs, but!), feat. the latest episode of @ifbookspod.bsky.social in the background (this might have been one of my fav episodes yet, which is saying a LOT)!

The author is a GREAT example of someone who should have taken (and learned from) anthropology classes rather than reading Jared Diamond. Happily, @michaelhobbes.bsky.social and @notalawyer.bsky.social learn from anthropologists and historians and then rip this bullshit to shreds.
Episode 46: Sapiens

It's an ambitious goal to write the entire history of humanity in just 400 pages. It's even more ambitious to do it without reading any research.

I saw this when I was about 8-9 and it’s forever after been lodged in my brain as one of my formative pieces of media. What a beautiful movie.
The Secret of Roan Inish (1994). Why did John Sayles not direct all the movies? He’s one of the great humanitarian directors who can move you without resort to sentimentality. This Irish fable is such a beautiful piece of work with Haskel Wexler plainly enjoying the light and colour of Ireland.

Also to note, the current inventory marked as ‘coming soon’ on the shop isn’t up to date! I’ll try to fix it up soon!
The market is done & now I need to get the remaining guys (& a few vessels) into the shop…I’m hoping to have a bunch of this up (on heywitch.bigcartel.com) within the next two weeks…stay tuned for more info soon!
