Me and my roommate have been buying too many Final Fantasy trading cards lately because the nice lady at my local game store put our asses fully on blast today by remembering our "usual" orders.

Like Jason, I'm strongly reconsidering my SFWA membership over this.

I have been for a long time, from when I was on the Board and previous leadership stonewalled our efforts at support for Palestinian and other authors impacted by genocide. If SFWA doesn't support authors, what is the point?
I ended up writing a Genre Grapevine column about all this that goes into more detail than my Bluesky thread possibly could. Check it out for additional details.

I also urge all SFWA members to contact the organization about this change. 8/

SFWA is well aware that LLMs are built upon the plagiarism of their membership. This rule allows plagiarized works to be nominated for the Nebulas, so long as it's not the entirety of the work, the author discloses their plagiarism, and the plagiarism is done though environment-destroying tech.
Another Nebula Awards nomination cycle is in full swing, and the addition of poetry and comics, along with the presence of LLMs in industry, required careful consideration.

Read on, and vote well!

We trust our voters & look forward to what they choose to celebrate.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

I'm gonna print this post out, I got my first Bluesky Scold over it.

Apparently I'm expected to frame my work gripe posts for an intended audience of my followers who've read my previous work gripe posts as fully cited PSAs for the general public.

(I will not be doing that lmao)
Update on the other week, when I caught Merriam-Webster trying to sneak AI slop onto their website AGAIN: they did not respond to me or make a statement about it, but it is gone now.

So they know what the market is saying, but corporations are not your friends or on your side.
Merriam-Webster’s human editors have chosen ‘slop’ as the 2025 Word of the Year.

Trying to find something new to read on Libby, and the state of political epic fantasy is absolutely grisly.

Potentially good news for me, an author currently working on that kind of book, if there's THAT big a gap in the market, but bad news for me, a reader who enjoys political fantasy :(

Expedition 33 sweep then shadowing dropping a free expansion during their GOTY victory speech is absolutely iconic. Truly nobody is doing it like them.

Hey @merriam-webster.com why has AI slop returned to your website around the same time you're trying to market yourself as anti-AI?

Horrible news! My agent loved my magnum opus that I've been working on since I was 11, which means I am about to become insufferable forever!

(I do still have to do massive revisions on it, so I stay humble😔)

When I was at Kumoricon I ordered this beautiful Amaurot clock as an irresponsible treat, and it arrived today and I love it so much, but it has been a long time since I had an analog clock in such a small space. They are LOUD.

TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS
From Evan: it's a huge night of hope for the trans community. The Republicans went all in on anti-trans ads in multiple races and so far there's no sign it got them anything.

Perhaps the page can be turned on blaming us for Harris' loss last year.

AND ANOTHER THING!

Platner & ilk think misogyny and antisemitism should not disqualify white men for political office.

If I were to run for political office, do you know what would disqualify me?

That I'm non-binary. That I'm autistic. Even that I'm an atheist.
Graham Platner to @daveweigel.bsky.social:
"How do you expect to win back men when you go back through somebody’s Reddit history and just pull it all out and say: ‘Oh, my God, this person has no right to ever be in politics?’"

DSCC Chair Gillibrand: “It’s up to the voters of Maine to decide.”

White men disillusioned with the right need to get comfortable with the notion that they will need to look to people who don't look like them for leadership from time to time.

Especially when the crisis at hand was caused by white men trying to consolidate wealth and political power.

Because I fear this may come up again before midterms, my general-purpose stance:

A person who does not have the good sense to not get a Nazi tattoo cannot be trusted to have the political instincts necessary to successfully serve the good of the public.
