Oh thank you! I’m gonna share this around. There are obviously lots of critical voices, but the overarching culture is…not. In fact, the only things in my university’s guidelines on AI are aimed at undergrads and about inaccuracies and plagiarism USING AI (and not that it’s a plagiarism machine)

STATLER; "This funeral is so boring, I'm jealous of the guy in the coffin! Ah ha ha ha ha!"
[Statler turns to the empty chair next to him and sheds one tear]

Thanks for ripping my heart out!!!

I feel like if I did one bad book a year, with a view to entertaining my friends, I could manage it
janeruffino.bsky.social
Trying to remember who I was talking to about starting a Bad Books Club, where we take turns reading the “you say you think it’s shit, but have you actually read it???” books. Sort of an @ifbookspod.bsky.social but IRL and with snacks and slide decks

Life is simply too short. Nothing I have seen from him makes me want to see any more from him

Oh my god YES, although admittedly I didn’t read it, just got the breakdown from Dawn of Everything 😂

I’m so glad it sounds like you’re in a space where you can do the work you were born to do, and have the impact you deserve—and the world deserves! And I hope you’re being compensated accordingly.
janeruffino.bsky.social
Oh hell yes, it’s WILD. Incredible to end up in spaces where people around you just like…acknowledge you! It must have made it hard to really grasp the impact you’ve had all this time, on so many of us! ❤️

It’s more bizarre than I can share publicly! I had to stop going to the meetings because the gaslighting is bananas. I think archaeology has an important role to play in historicizing critical perspectives on technological change, and fighting ethnonationalist narratives, but kids just wanna be cops
janeruffino.bsky.social
Oh I know! I think they actually DO share it, but they’re afraid to show or say it. Eventually, a white Swedish man will say it in a white Swedish man’s voice, and it will get more traction, but until then, at least I know I’m preaching to a silent choir I can’t identify yet 😅

We’re talking about a faculty that’s dismantling my department over petty politics and just going along with the university’s demand to divert funding from the humanities to the police academy (I’m not making this up) because “it’s what the students want.” Not exactly brave fighters here.
janeruffino.bsky.social
Oh I agree! I just mean that I’m just treated as this old crank who shouldn’t be listened to on anything! I always drop into my talks that one of the reasons I’m doing this research is that I hate large-scale AI and i see my work as a counter narrative.
janeruffino.bsky.social
I mean…sort of. Swedish people tend to only pay attention to something if it’s in the Swedish news, and Swedish news is relatively uncritical. Most of the AI discourse is like “sometimes it’s not accurate.” I tried to speak up about the writing with AI module, but I’m already considered a crank!
janeruffino.bsky.social
Oh my god, I have not seen this! In my own university, there’s a PhD course where they’re going to be adding a module on how to use ChatGPT in your academic writing. I’m like…what. Also, none of the instructors have a clue how it works or what its limitations are, so that should be fun

Also: writing is a skill not a magic power. It’s furniture building, not communing with the muses. Settle down and just do the work, enjoy it, and stop trying to pretend it’s some deep magical power. It’s a craft. A fun challenging one! But a craft. Relax.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

Ha! Since the spring, I have 2 new vastly different design talks and 4 net new cable talks (although those have a lot of overlap, but 4 different audiences, themes, etc)

Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

That’s how I read it, as quietly damning, and like it had been sent back for edits to create a shift in framing, which was never quite complete.

Ok now I have written my talk and made my deck for my FIFTH talk in 4 weeks (although I recycled one talk twice bc it was informal) which is on Tuesday so please clap
janeruffino.bsky.social
I’m doing a talk on it at Button! It’s more from the perspective of what it costs the discipline when we have to rent the tools for our work, how many there are, and the cost, but yes, this is a crisis!

And add to it, I have to navigate SO many consequential things in a language I’m bad at :(
