So much loss…including my mother in December 2020. COVID is personal for me.

A $3 million settlement is major victory, but it can’t undo the damage to press freedom from the illegal raid on the Marion County Record.

If other communities don’t want to learn First Amendment law the expensive way, they must train police and prosecutors to respect press rights.

Agree completely 😡
"Show up. It's their job"

The gall sometimes. We're all short 5 weeks pay, and the House continues their extended, paid vacation. In any functional government, if you don't have the votes to pass your agenda you compromise to get the important pieces. You don't take your ball and go home.
If you just cancel flights, then they're actually not late! Brilliant stuff from Sean Duffy here

The Nashville radar is down. But, the good people who serve you every day at the NWS finally received the 130lb palette with the part on it. Their two techs are now lugging that part to the top of the radar tower to try and get the radar operational before SVR arrives. All while not being paid.

Traffic fatalities for kids rise on Halloween. Drive carefully.

Study of 42 years of Halloweens and 1 ,580,608 traffic crashes reveals relative risk of a pedestrian fatality is 43% higher on Halloween compared with control evenings. A typical Halloween results in 4 additional pedestrian deaths.

This study examines 42 years of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data to establish whether Halloween is associated with an increased rate of pedestrian fatalities.

Amongst all going on tonight, I post this radar velocity image. No weather, just the last of bird migration. The radar is the little black circle in the middle. All the birds in green above where the radar is are heading south. Those below it in red are also heading south.

Echoing colleagues: Think before you (re)post. #Melissa is about to impact a relatively poor part of Jamaica. I doubt we will know the true extent of the devastation for days or weeks.

Information vacuums fill with disinformation. Expect a lot of “breaking wind” on SM.

This quote captures our meteorology community emotions so well, though few of us get to experience this kind of front row seat. 😳
That stark combination of scientific wonder and deep concern for those on the ground. Given this is during a shutdown, extra hard to concentrate these days. 💔
Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci flew into the eye of Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that is projected to hit Jamaica.

“It was equal parts scientifically stunning and horrifying from a humanitarian standpoint,” he wrote, flying in one of two groups of hurricane hunters. https://wapo.st/42XpWmq

Being born before the measles vaccine, my immunity is “natural”. Yes, I survived but haven’t forgotten how miserably sick I was. Denying this vaccine for your kids exposes them to at minimum a miserable experience. How can parents be OK with that?
Our grandparents would have crawled across broken glass to get vaccinated, they saw what these diseases did — firsthand.

Many of us have no personal frame of reference for how bad these diseases are, until it is too late.

Preferring to believe some batsh*t crazy stuff online.

Get vaccinated.
US anti-vax stance to blame for continent-wide surge in measles, say experts
The disease was eliminated across the Americas in 2024, but urgent vaccination drives are now under way as cases rise from Mexico to Bolivia after outbreaks farther north

Just noting this is not a “full” government shutdown. A real shutdown would mean lights out for ATC; no weather radar or satellite data. No weather forecast modeling output. No SS checks. This is just a slice of everyday federal services Americans take for granted.
PIMCO, on the #shutdown:

“.. At this point, this standoff feels like a war of attrition with neither side suggesting they will blink .. we think is likely to last until November and possibly extend to Thanksgiving.

“.. we are on the precipice of the longest full government shutdown in history.”

Shutdown for me means working from home. Yes, I am fortunate; just miss interacting with colleagues SO MUCH 😞
Also pandemic memories are lurking and I feel a bit trapped. My colleagues who are working without pay are trapped in a different way. May we have some sanity in Congress soon. 🙏

American humans: we are all more at risk from weather-induced disasters. While the remaining scientists run to the rooftops slamming pots and pans, any loss of messaging costs lives and horrific disruption for survivors. #NotADrill 💔
NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

I haven’t been in a convenience store in ages, but can empathize with this 🤣
Every time I stop in a 7/11, I get stuck behind someone who has A System™ for the Powerball, MegaMillions and three other random lotteries, barking out their tried-and-true sequence of numbers to the cashier like he's trying to keep the island on LOST from exploding.
