“Political communication by mainstream parties plays a central role in the electoral success of the far right”

How much more research do journalisten, politicians, pundits and strategists need before they finally change course?

Normalisation of far-right stances likely to affect success of such parties at ballot boxes across Europe, say researchers

It’s a wonderful book. The main takeaway for politicians is that ideology, beliefs, even values are basically rationalisation after the fact. Valence voting is the only game in town.

Don’t do this
Did you know If a pepper ball or tear gas is deployed and leaking, or you can place it in a secondary sealed container (rigid plastic bin) to prevent exposure or place a bucket over it. you must wear chemical resistant gloves (nitrile or thicker) if you can pick it up use shovel or long tongs

Don’t handle tear gas grenades with nitrile gloves. Also don’t handle them at all as some may be flashbangs that have nit functioned properly
In case helpful, you can neutralize tear gas canisters with a cone / jug with wide opening / large plastic containers with lids and water. Just be sure to wear nitrile gloves, a gas mask, goggles, and to move fast! More to come every now and then 🖤

All this extra cost (time & money) for *less* fucking access to our continent. Brexit is such ridiculous "self harm"
For god's sake UK, stop with your Gammon Curtain & do what rest of Europe doing: join the EU/reciprocate FoM; join Schengen. Embrace freedom

Port of Dover bosses insist there will not be delays due to the new system on day one.

No. To take the UK, the Tories were fooled into believing that there’s a “populist wave” and the party disintegrated on contact with reality (especially re Brexit). The foolish Labour leadership are now doing the same. There’s a populist *reservoir* which can be tapped - or not. Choose the latter.
No, mainly it’s because they just don’t get it and they don’t like it. All the rest is the usual justification after the fact (which covers 90% of so-called “ideology”).

AKSHULLY, I wrote a separate piece on Hegseth's military jamboree, and again, my issue was one I chose: The declining mental acuity of the man with the nuclear codes. You can read it here:

In any case, with the likes of Kash Patel it’s enough to say “behold!” The guy’s opinions and actions proclaim his own condemnation.
The utter ineptitude of the Russian military has deep historical roots. It took Stalin’s reckless cruelty - and Western arms - not to mention a foreign invasion of unprecedented savagery (the Mongols backed off if you were submissive) to whip it into shape.
Most such aberrant “views” are artefacts of the relevant survey. Over time, most voters’ views are centrist, even social democratic. Check out Larry Bartels’ Democracy Erodes from the Top, based on close analysis of European Social Survey data from 2003 to 2019.

I wrote about this in "The Unaccountability Machine" - when you describe leveraged buyouts to ordinary people, half of them say that it should be illegal and the other half are often convinced that it already is.
Buying a company by taking out a massive loan, then making the company you bought responsible for paying off that loan, is so patently evil that it should be beyond illegal. The kind of thing that inspires enlightened societies without corporal punishment to bring back the death penalty as a one-off
I remember seeing Kenneth Branagh play the lead when he was still a rising star. He was wonderful.
I would cite Basil Fawlty’s “this is just how Nazi Germany started” but they didn’t have anything like this technology. Ellison is a living advert for why we need a “euthanasia of the rentiers” in Keynes’ sense (not literal, iow).
The AI glitter rush more like.
Because the Treasury thinks that what’s good for the City is good for the economy. Until the Treasury View is rooted out entirely we’ll never prosper.
Unherd, regardless of ownership, does have some decent writers, but I agree, this article is positively cr*tinous.
