Intro post! I'm Jae (formerly Jacqueline) Koyanagi, author of the sci-fantasy novel Ascension, among other things: jaekoyanagi.com

Currently, I'm deep into writing the first book of a character-driven romantic fantasy trilogy set in a lush, unusual world where divine magic abounds.

What makes you go Feral for a book? What can an author do that turns "I enjoy this" to "This is not only living in my head rent-free, it has demolished the existing edifice and built itself a palace in my brain"?

Since I'm participating in that romance-oriented prompt game this month, I'll re-share the commissioned art of my non-human couple, Grisira and Deleyora. I can't wait to share more about their species in the future. Grisira art by @danilluzin.com, Deleyora art by @grendraws.bsky.social

Extremely fancy special editions, an oracle card deck, enamel pins, an endless parade of art prints (that I pay the artists handsomely for, ofc), Danforth plushies, t-shirts... probably more. I'd go all out.
If money was no object, what sort of merchandise would you make for your book? #WritingPrompt

VFTDC has explicit scenes, but I also employ fade to black where appropriate. There are character, story, and even narrator reasons to get granular about the intimacy between Grisira and Deleyora, but sometimes the story pacing/rhythm asks for a closed door.
Today's #Smutcember prompt:

How do you decide how “far” to take a scene in a written work? Do you have varying levels based on certain factors?

Writers who use genAI for illustrations are class traitors. We all have to fight this beast TOGETHER. We are not just trying to save SOME of our livelihoods.
Self-published authors are unfortunately very rapidly becoming my most-blocked demographic on here due entirely to the rampant use of hideous AI generated book covers
Just in case it wasn't clear: If I click on your profile and see that you've used AI to make something, you get blocked.

i do wish more people understood that what makes writing "poetic" has much less to do with the word choice and much more to do with the pacing and structure of sentences and paragraphs. the rhythm of the language is absolutely vital to the feel of the text.

Endlessly astonished at Mandy's skills. Look at this magnificent costume!
Dragon Empress: the start! I should probably post the sketch that I started this, obviously there were some changes along the way! I do kind of regret shrinking the lower wings so much, but I worried you wouldn’t see the skirt at all....I have to find some kind of happy middle ground w those. cont—

Some of this would be spoiler territory, so I'll try to talk around those elements.

Both Grisira & Deleyora find safety & comfort in how thoroughly seen & understood they make each other feel. There are Reasons why, but suffice it to say, they're entirely open and vulnerable with each other. 🧵
I said we'd get to it, and here we are, #Smutcember:

What do your characters find *emotionally* attractive about each other?

If I really do need to cut something, I cut it. I may or may not realize that need until the manuscript lands in the hands of an editor, but I'm always open to listening to why such a change might strengthen the story.

I'm less likely to cut character/relationship moments.
What’s something you’ve been too stubborn to cut from your WIP even though you probably need to? #WritingPrompt

There are no beards on their world because there is no hair.

Or more accurately, what passes for hair (but isn't keratin-based) only exists on a species of fewer than 20 individuals.
How common are beards in your book?

It's time for slower art. The constant churn and grind pushed by techno capitalism has reached its inevitable conclusion with AI slop. Let's make our best work and be patient with our process. Let's release art that's worth stopping for and savoring. Let's show each other what humans can do

It's always nice to see the Lilac-breasted Roller in action, as we did in South Africa in August. This species and the Sunbittern are the two birds that I will constantly be trying to improve upon when it comes to flight shots.

Saw an enormous hawk in a tree in our neighborhood during our walk this morning. I could even *hear* their size from the rustle of feathers when they shook their wings. Wish I could've gotten a better look, but we didn't want to drive it away.

The optimist in me thinks we're on the brink of a new Renaissance.

Mainstream art and entertainment has quickly become soulless, corporate, algorithmically-engineered slop. People are hungry for art that is very unique, human, and sincere.

What a revolutionary time to be a human artist.

Meet Khetris, beautifully painted by @danilluzin.com!

Despite appearances, they're not an elf. They're one of less than twenty individuals of their (very non-human) species, & there is significantly more to them than their presentation suggests. I can't wait to share more in time!
