Intro post! I'm Jae (formerly Jacqueline) Koyanagi, author of the sci-fantasy novel Ascension, among other things: jaekoyanagi.com

Currently, I'm deep into writing the first book of a character-driven romantic fantasy trilogy set in a lush, unusual world where divine magic abounds.
The book cover for Ascension: A Tangled Axon Novel by Jae Koyanagi (credited as Jacqueline on the cover). The illustration features main character Alana Quick, a Black woman with her hand on her hip, looking at the viewer. Behind her is the interior of a spaceship painted in cool colors with a view of a nebula and stars beyond. The cover for the audio series Ninth Step Station from Realm, featuring a textured background in cool, dark colors. The text reads: In the future, two mismatched cops must work together to solve crimes in a divided Tokyo: Ninth Step Station by award-winning authors Malka Older, author of Infomocracy; Fran Wilde, author of Updraft; Jacqueline Koyanagi, author of Ascension; and Curtis C. Chen, author of Waypoint Kangaroo. The cover for the audio series Ctrl-Alt-Destroy from Realm. The image features the old title for the series, Alternis, and the former name of the publisher, which was Serial Box. The illustration features main character Tandy Kahananui slicing through a video game foe with a sword, scattering them into digital fragments. The cover for the anthology Phantasm Japan, from Haikasoru. The illustration features the head of a Japanese woman who is looking up toward the title. Behind her is the Tokyo skyline, while flames emerge from her right eye and winged insects flutter around her.

A memorable day four years ago - had to hike miles to get close enough to this amazing river braiding along the south coast of #Iceland. Such weird colours!

Weird orange, grey and yellow river braids seen from a drone. Lots of swirly patterns of the meandering braids and channels. Weird orange, grey/blue and yellow river braids seen from a drone. Three colours of water over sand banks below at a river estuary - pale yellow, the brown, then orange.

Writing was occasionally agonizing today, every word hard won. The creative ordeal fueled my characters, in the end. Even at its most frustrating, the satisfaction writing provides is incomparable.

Now it's beta reading time.

it’s that time of year again 🍂🍃

I read The Necessity of Rain by Sarah Chorn a few weeks or so back and it was exceptional.

One of my favorite roles in life is dog nest.
A side shot of a Golden Retriever curled up in a woman's lap, relaxed. Other than her denim-covered legs, the woman is out of view.

Everyone saying "make weird art!" you better fucking mean it. There better not be an unspoken "but not too weird" tacked on at the end.

I feel this! My writing life is extremely solitary and I've been trying to remedy that, though I'm not great at it. There's a small one run by @kiraofthewind.com if that interests you!

Woke up early so decided to take an impromptu trip to Elk Island National Park. Saw a number of bison along the roads and had a nice encounter with this coyote who was kind enough not to immediately run away. #wildlife #coyote

Exhausted after going to LA to see Sleep Token last night, but it sure was worth it. There's nothing quite like gathering with hundreds of other humans to celebrate a shared love of someone's music. A spiritually/emotionally restorative experience.
