I like movies a lot. I worry about right-wing extremism. I play and sometimes write tabletop RPGs. I do SRE things but don’t speak for my employer here. I grew up in New England and live with my wife in Seattle. He/his.

There is a story of a widow woman & her daughters, Snow White & Rose Red, the most darling little girls who had ever lived.

This is not—quite—that story.

Share a 90s movie you think deserves more love…

That’s tough. Most of the 90s movies I really love are generally appreciated; the more obscure ones are mostly critical favorites.

“I wish more people would see Drifting Clouds!”
“No shit.”

But Next Stop Wonderland (con’t).

Are Election (1999) and Election (2005) the best pair of unrelated movies with the same name? Is there any other pairing that’s even good at all? 📽️

Aw, Jimmy Cliff. That’s sad. When I was a kid my parents had this scruffy white dude pal who wanted to be a Rasta and this soundtrack got played a LOT. Electrifying movie. youtu.be/d9CJorHyG1s

TFW your players get custom dice for the “one-shot” that’s already run for three sessions. #TTRPG

Oh hey, @skywatch.blue comes in handy! The Patrick Webb dude who’s making a living bitching about Trump is the same Patrick Webb who pushed election fraud and hydroxychloroquine a couple of years ago. Grifters!

I am not sure why it took me 20+ years to realize I should keep TTRPG campaign material in file folders, further organized with liberal use of paperclips, but here I am.

The only book I have that comes close is below, and I recommend it, but it's tangential.

I've also seen this Italy-specific doc, which is also good: letterboxd.com/film/eurocri...

Anyone have any book recommendations for Eurocrime movies? Wider scope is better -- I'm very interested in how, say, krimi influenced poliziotteschi. But country-specific stuff is still cool. Paging @kinoventura.bsky.social and @leavingfilmstrk.bsky.social in particular. 🎥

NW: Choice of Arms, the last movie in the @filmsradiance.bsky.social Alain Corneau boxed set. It’s been a great set so far, although real world death and sexual abuse casts a dark shadow over these already fairly dark movies. 🎥

I am somewhat perturbed that my local DoorDash choices now include one serving nothing but dog food. There can’t be a business model there.

TIL that John Frankenheimer made a movie in 1982 co-starring Toshirō Mifune, co-written by John Sayles. 📽️

Really the best thing about the Mamdani/Trump meeting is the way I’m gonna look at the next centrist who tells me we can’t vote for progressives because Trump will use them as an excuse to crack down.

Last day of work before vacation is a good time for #LastFourWatched. And what a week -- two special screenings most recently, both with the director presenting, plus a classic Varda I've been saving. 📽️

This, from experience, rings true. I’ll also say that gritting my teeth and having the conversation with a couple of exes helped (and relieved my concerns). I have a couple more of them I’d like to have.
Like I think there are a lot of men out there for whom the last several decades of discourse about consent and structural coercion and all that have begun to register and they’re now kinda queasily uncertain because maybe that ex who divorced them because they “didn’t listen” to her…

Hush is real good. You’re gonna think it’s a true crime podcast until you realize it’s about the death of local news, who holds power in small towns and how, and social media. Why yes, these topics do seem related.
@leahsottile.bsky.social is another talented member of our unit. She's an investigative journalist, author, and the co-creator of OPB's new series, "Hush."

Why was 18-year-old Sarah Zuber found dead 400 feet from her front door? And how is it possible, six years later, that no one knows what happened to her?

Hush, Season 2, "Love Thy Neighbor" — my investigation with @ryanjhaas.bsky.social — starts today.

Oh boy. Well, I very much hope that this is part of a process of self-examination; despite a rough couple of years, SIFF is a Seattle treasure and failure would leave a tremendous hole in Seattle’s culture.
BREAKING: Tom Mara is out as Executive Director at SIFF, closing a tumultuous year for the local arts organization. The news was announced today to staff and a search for a replacement is now set to begin sometime in 2026 📽️
