Not only is it an all time great opener, but this opening sequence is a magnificently layered portrait of a dead-eyed suburan Americana that has perverted every aspect of life through its fixation on TV spectacle.
The serendipitous TV studio shoot made this film prophetic in so many horrible ways.

This makes me so mad because there’s lots LOTS of really daring, gripping, torrid romances from the last 100 years, but they do NOT receive the market play they should outside of the scant few which get questionable movie adaptations (Price of Salt, Endless Love, Call me by Your Name come to mind)
The great romance novels are centuries old at this point. The market has refined itself into commercially profitable total cultural irrelevance.
