I think it has more to do with people being sick of Pokemon games looking/running like absolute dog shit.

I've always said that art style matters more than high fidelity graphics, Nintendo seems to be aware of this too because they make some great looking games on shit hardware. Pokemon fails both.

Some of it is a lack of critical thinking.

And some of it is a choice to believe things they know are false because it keeps the party going.

Choosing to believe in the face of absurdity is faith. Religious conservatives have no problem accepting things that defy logic. They like the delusion.
