I am feeling more and more my grandmother’s family story - disability saved them. She immigrated before WW1 but everyone else stayed. Her grandfather was deaf and had been sent as a youth to school in the city (maybe Vilna). 1/4

Good 🌎 news. "It became one of the leading facilities that transfers coal from rail to ships on the Great Lakes .... [T]he facility set a record loading 22 million short tons of coal in 2008" but shift from coal-fired plants led to 75 percent reduction.

1/ Today, ProPublica is running a piece I've been working on for a bit. It's about what happened with a devastating wave of bird flu earlier this year, as egg prices hit record highs.

And it's a story that illuminates the ways the U.S. is failing to control what could become the next pandemic. 🧵

I mean, look, I'm not a reporter, so who am I to talk?

But on a day where the president both just called a woman reporter "Piggy" and is celebrating someone who had people bone saw apart one of my colleagues, I might just be a little ready to defend my colleagues and profession.

But that's just me

“Short bursts indicate an ICE sighting. Long whistles indicate agents making arrests. If you hear the whistle and you’re undocumented, said [Whitney Hu, a community activist and organizer with South Brooklyn Mutual Aid], ‘you hide. And if you’re somebody who’s not, you go to the street.’”
As ICE Street Raids Ramp Up, New Yorkers Stock Up On Whistles
Taking a cue from Chicago, community groups have distributed thousands of whistles in recent weeks — a grassroots system people in other cities have adopted to help neighbors sound the alarm.

That nurse and her hospital should be humiliated right now. I doubt that they are. She knew she was being recorded.

(I’ll add that feeling pressure in your rectum is a drop-everything-baby-is-here-now situation, which every nurse knows.)

Here’s how you actually handle this:

Alice Wong's passing is a hard one for the disability community to hear today. Her and I chatted once for my podcast, and then the audio got deleted by accident and we never did it again. She was a powerhouse and challenged how we look at disability and able-bodiness. May she rest in power.

THIS!!!!
Not just profs - this is true for any professional. If it’s not on my calendar, it doesn’t exist!
Pet peeve: when someone invites you to a meeting but instead of sending a calendar invitation, they just send a zoom link in an email.

If you want profs to actually show up for meetings-- send a calendar invitation!

The important thing is not whether the Trump performing sexual favors for Bill Clinton thing is true. The important thing is that we all pretend it’s true, and that someone asks Trump about it every day.

Eye opening experience in my very early 20s (1990s). I volunteered for Travelers Aid Society in Tucson AZ. The social worker who I trained with in helping unhoused folks…was on food stamps because his salary was so low. Let it sink in.
