In keeping with my being waaaaay behind on reading Don Quixote, I just learned that it was Cervantes's birthday on Oct 9. #dq25

At some point people started conflating “contrarian” with “smart.”

Excited to read Moby-Dick again next year! Every time I read it I think it is absolutely a propos to whatever is going on in the US/world. Will be really interesting to see how it views submission to an unhinged authoritarian this time around.🐋 📖

Alright, the people have spoken, let’s bring THE MONTH OF DICK read-along of Moby Dick back on January 1, 2026!

We still need to work out some logistics (new feed? new emoji?), but it will happen!

But get ready! Get that fancy edition, stockpile your memes, start your whale dimensions tattoo… 🐋

Same! Most of my little experiments go nowhere (okra, favas -- can't grow enough to be worth it; artichokes and cardoons -- season not long enough) but this one was the rare success.
hleisthen.bsky.social
I'm surprised too! This is really helpful info. Definitely inspires me to go ahead with at least the bean part of my plan for next year.
hleisthen.bsky.social
Oh, WOW. How much space did you devote to shelling beans this year?
hleisthen.bsky.social
I was astonished.

My other experiment was with RG cranberry/borlotti beans and I also gave them at least 5'. None of them got taller than about 18", but the yields were terrific.
hleisthen.bsky.social
Ah! I have cattle-panel trellises that are tall enough for these bad boys. Will think about planting in front of a trellis next year.
hleisthen.bsky.social
Wow, thanks! I was wondering about my yield -- I have maybe 15 sq ft that I could dedicate to them next year.

Do yours get crazy tall? I used 5' bamboo stakes to make little pyramids for support and they outgrew them by several feet.
hleisthen.bsky.social
Oh, wow, that's great to know! Do you start them indoors, or just plunk 'em in the ground when the soil is warm enough for beans?

Salvation Army seen feeding ICE today. For anyone who doesn't already know about their bigotry, here is more, No need to give them your money this Christmas, or ever.

It’s dinner time for the police. Appears to be pizza from a Salvation Army van.

Broadview’s “free speech” curfew starts soon, at 6pm.

Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

Hey, you idiotic propagandists at the New York Post:

God Bless America isn't the national anthem. It's a SHOW TUNE written by Irving Berlin.

Can we start arguing now? Because Quishmeal sounds like something I'd buy from skinny hippies at the farmer's market hoping it'd make my pizza dough more interesting but it turns rancid really fast.

So I'm team Ishqueg.

FWIW I vote you continue to use the old feed and existing emoji (unless you need to be feed admin).

Oh, I have no idea if this was a successful harvest, having not grown them before. Harvested only bc they're dropping their leaves as it's getting into the low 40s at night. I think in a warmer place and/or with more room they'd do great.
hleisthen.bsky.social
Update: I got ~100 g after planting 9 beans. Pretty satisfying ROI; will definitely plant more next year.
Freshly-shelled, gorgeously mottled Good Mother Stallard beans in a low, rectangular metal colander.

@jacobharr.is, I don't know if this would interest you but if you have space and some pots these seem to do well in pretty meager conditions. I'm in zone 6b; harvested bc it's getting frosty here and the plants are dropping their leaves, but they definitely would go longer in a warmer clime.
hleisthen.bsky.social
I had some extra space and some extra 12" garden pots so as a little experiment I planted 9 Good Mother Stallard beans right outta the Rancho Gordo bag. Just harvested ~100 g of beans, which seems like a good ROI. Next year I'll plant maybe half a bed of them.
Gorgeous dark-reddish-brown-and-cream colored beans, freshley shelled, in a flat metal colander.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.
