Not sure which is more inconceivable: that Salem's city seal is what it is even today or that the historian defending it (or the article in fact) fails to mention the word "opium" even once, even as the family who traded it (Peabodys) commissioned the seal!

Cultural tribute or Asian stereotype? Salem roiled by dispute over city seal. - The Boston Globe
To one side, the seal contains an anachronistic, racial caricature of a 19th-century Asian merchant. To the other, it honors a progressive, cross-cultural commerce that benefited peoples a world apart...

Seems like every day brings reminders of just how thoroughly NYT-brained so many US-based Prestigious Academics™️ are. Frankly depressing, even if it’s not surprising.

Summers should choose the most straightforward path and resign. Should he refuse to, though, the University must cut ties with its former president to the greatest extent possible.

I know we're all used to just taking it for granted that GOP politicians are tied up in kooky far-right church circles, and many of them are, but it's genuinely an outlier for Hegseth to be so into this particular weirdo's tiny extremist sect. He's fringe even for the religious right.
Pete Hegseth’s church is part of Wilson’s sect, and Hegseth has praised Wilson.
Christian Nationalist, Doug Wilson, confirms that children who don’t accept and follow their parent’s religious beliefs should be turned over to the State for capital punishment (be put to death). This fanaticism is real:

when I hear Starmer speak about immigration and race he's spitting in the face of the Labour voters I knew growing up in Manchester, who put themselves on the line against the National Front - and often the police - in the 1970s and 1980s.
Ultimately the vision of britain that starmer has is profoundly cynical, nasty and just not true. He thinks that abidicating his responsibility in showing that another option is maturity and doing the difficult thing, but he's literally just creating the hateful country he is so afraid of

I am so so sorry that Alice Wong has left. I didn’t know her well, but I knew her for a long time and had many convos - and her words, her advocacy, and her humor meant so much for so many. And in classic Alice fashion she generously left us all a note. Safe travels, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social. 一路走好

It’s extremely rich to be gaslit by actual journos that this “isn’t a real story” while the NYT constantly makes non-stories into stories (THE ENTIRE COVERAGE OF MANDANI’S)
The emails that you’re seeing now are news in themselves, but that’s because of how they’re coming out—a congressional committee released them—& the context in which they’re being viewed. A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is “dirty” is not a whole news story.

Not the main point here, but this is exactly why Tokyo (or other allies) can't take anything for granted. You and your interests are not the priority, and if this wing grows in importance, that's only more true.
doing a Straussian reading of this post, especially point 3, and it's fairly obvious that Vance is aligned with the Tucker Carlson-wing of the GOP and thinks further right groups should be part of the tent, but won't outright break with Trump's I/P policy while he's still VP

I grew up among Christians and missionaries in Japan, some of whom were intensely antagonistic to other religions, but I’ve never heard of anyone getting anywhere near “anointing” or otherwise defacing shrines and temples. Like, that would have been so obviously beyond the pale. But NYT of course…
Yeah, don't do that.

I will not support a deal that does nothing to make health care more affordable.

We are in a health care emergency. A simple one-year extension of these tax credits would cost less than Donald Trump’s $40 billion bailout for Argentina.

A vote for this bill is a mistake.

Black American soldiers literally dug these WWII graves. Traumatic. To acknowledge that fact at a cemetery they helped construct is something the Heritage Foundation cannot accept. As Veterans Day approaches, never forget that this country both compels and disrespects Black military service. Always.
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️
