Mansion tax will be paid by less than 1 in 200 homes.

145k out of 30.4m homes.

For every home that will pay something under the new tax, 199 won't.

It's a tax on the 0.5% and 99.5% of us will not pay it.

I do not think that anger is a helpful emotion. It does not really do anything that is positive.

But I must admit that I am angry at a very fundamental level these days because everything that is currently happening in the UK was predictable and predicted. Not in every detail, but in the ... 🧵

An interesting read highlighting a serious issue in Scotland. I live in an area surrounded by inherited estates, the amount they limit the growth of rural communities is astonishing.
"The Scottish Government devised a scheme to help the very rich cream off public subsidies for tree planting. Buy land and then the Scottish Government will help you make a fortune from it by planting trees – any trees, anywhere. That is government for the rich, not for the public good."
Land is power – Scotland’s people have none
Land isn't just about wealth and justice, it's about power. Scotland is cut off from its own land resources and hence is poorer as a nation

Bookies manager of 6 years here.
- They do not support mental health, they enable problem gamblers. “Responsible gambling” is a myth.
- They moved gambling addiction to being a healthcare problem in 2022
- Penny machines? Not the same, not even close.
- Completely agreed on Point 4.
You may have missed this gem yesterday. From which we learn that:

1. Betting shops are really good for the mental health of isolated people.
2. Most drug-takers are not a problem.
3. Kids put tuppence in slot machines in the hope of getting rich.
4. Farage probably has a gambling industry donor.

1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

Let me put this as simply as possible: If the 60 Minutes editorial team cuts out most of their interview with Trump to make him look his best, and he still comes across as completely demented, then it is extremely likely that Trump actually is completely demented.

Close. He’ll be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. His father Prince Philip was a Mountbatten and it was important to him that his name continue on when he gave it up to marry QE2. So it was agreed upon that his untitled heirs would be called Mountbatten-Windsor

(This is my favorite reality show)
BREAKING

Prince Andrew will no longer be a Prince of the United Kingdom.

In an extraordinary move, Buckingham Palace has announced that the King is stripping him of that style.

Presumably, he will now be known as Andrew Windsor.

The Palace also stated he has been ordered to leave Royal Lodge.

One of my favorite moments from Nobel Prize history:

The Nobel Committee couldn’t reach Stanford professor Paul Milgrom to let him know that he had been awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics, so his fellow winner, Robert Wilson, went over to his house in the middle of the night to wake him up!
