My pinned post disappeared again so HI! If you like gorey monster stories, suspenseful mysteries, supernatural thrillers, cryptid horror, and books where the killer in the woods is a metaphor for grief, you should check out my debut novel, "The Woods: A Horror Novel", out now!

The cover for Hazel E. Baumgartner's "The Woods: A Horror Novel". The book's title is in white text over a black background with the subtle texture of coarse hair. In the middle, a black and white photograph of a misty coniferous forest.

I write supernatural horror, so no, the supernatural is the more scary part.

Q4.
Do hang around for the outro, in around 10 minutes.

Which is the easier route? Or the more satisfying?

#HorrorWritersChat
Q4
In your stories: is desperation scarier than the supernatural?
hazelebaumgartner.bsky.social
Scarcity isn't an issue in "The Woods", but remoteness is. Tensions are higher when help is an hour away by helicopter. In a way, remoteness is the scarcity of commodity, so I suppose it counts. #HorrorWritersChat

Q2. So many of you are diving in courageously. I salute you. Don't worry, now we go more abstract.

Q2
How does scarcity or deprivation shape the worlds you build in your stories?
hazelebaumgartner.bsky.social
I'm Hazel, I write thriller and creature feature horror, and my bank account is currently at -$10.44.

Oh right then here we go, if it glitches I'll wait till it's back up then fire the next.
Can't say fairer than that. Hi #HorrorWritersChat, let's talk riches. Or poverty. Moral or cash, I don't mind which.
Horror is one of the more egalitarian genres I think. More room for poor...

No links please.
Question One
Assemble, horror bods!
Tell me what kind of horror you write, and how poor are you - financially or morally? You choose....

A fun little horror credential of mine is that I grew up a little under 25 straight-line miles from where they filmed the 1997 remake of "The Shining" and lived there during filming. Just like 3 mountains over.

One of my beta readers said #Heliruna gave them nightmares, which is extremely high praise for a horror novel.

It’s amazing how all the reporting is just memory-holing this part

Trump hates this photo of him. Definitely don't share it far and wide today.

Vaccines cause adultism.

As in, vaccinated kids have a chance of living to 18.

Queer representation deserves more than to be reduced to just marketing tropes.

And lesbians deserve to have something more than a sword. Give the Sapphics crossbows, they can handle it.

Every Columbus day I have to remind people that not only did Columbus bring smallpox to the Americas and cause an outbreak that killed millions, but he also brought syphilis back to Europe and caused an outbreak that killed 5 million Europeans too. Fuck Christopher Columbus all around.

If Steinbeck can tell one of the best stories of the 20th century in 107 pages, there's no reason a story about "scary clown eats children" should be 1,168 pages.

Signed, the author of a 252 page horror novel.

Circulating this. Let’s see if we can help out in spreading the news, raising awareness and enough dollars to make a difference in the absence of FEMA and news coverage.

🚨The absence of media coverage of this natural disaster in Alaska, the lost/missing people, and the destruction of the aftermath is up to us to share. Please help if you can - even if it is just spreading awareness. There is no FEMA going to help them. 1/2

Not enough people are talking about how Epstein's Best Friend is kidnapping children...

Remember when trump 45 was separating migrant children from their parents back in 2017? I recall about 1,000 kids never being located. That's a huge "oopsie!"

Very curious to see how this ICE-scapade will resemble trafficking. It already seems like more and more are slipping by the judicial system.

Trump has begun dismissing federal workers, with furloughed staff at the Department of Health and Human Services now facing permanent layoffs. The cuts are hitting the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention especially hard.

I'm currently trying to get comp titles from readers, but my current FFO listing is "The Only Good Indians" by @sgj.bsky.social, "Congo" by Michael Crichton, and "Devolution" by Max Brooks. So yeah I'd recommend all three of those to my readers.
