There's no mention of snow in "Heliruna", but there is in both "The Woods" and the short story that inspired "Heliruna", "The Mimic". I'll share both.
Page 62 of the manuscript for "The Woods". in the living room so it seemed like a normal Saturday morning to anyone who was just listening, and set out north down the driveway. The sun filtered through the thinly needled spruce branches, illuminating the forest floor with the golden light of dawn diffused by a dense autumnal fog, and scattering sparkles everywhere through the thin layer of snow, reminding Tom and Jason of Narnia as they traveled and only serving to amplify the magic that they hoped to reclaim in their kingdoms. Chickadees flitted about in the trees on either side of the driveway, peeping busily to themselves as they scavenged for pine-nuts. The sound of the birds and the crunch of snow and gravel under the boys’ boots seemed like the only sounds in the world, and the valley lay otherwise silent sprawling out for miles in any direction from them. It relieved the boys greatly that, even on the border of the Queendom, the magic that they had loved in the woods was still all around them. The boys reached the fenceline near the doubletrack logging road, where they could no longer see the house around the slight bend in the driveway. Almost a mile back the way they came was the house, warm and safe, with smoke pouring out of the chimney and hot breakfast to be served in a few mere hours. Another ten yards or so to the north was the doubletrack logging road, on the side of which sat the mailbox that Sheriff Callahan’s wife, Shannon, had specially painted with the name “CARLINI”, as a homemaking gift for the grieving family. Their excursion into the woods now felt more real, as they couldn’t even call for help anymore if they needed it. Striking out to the east from the driveway along the fenceline was a trail just wide enough for the two of them to walk side by side. This trail had been blazed by their father earlier that summer, and they both knew it led to Harmony's grave. It didn’t matter. The grave was empty, they... An excerpt from my short story "The Mimic". It reads Autumn woke up on her bedroom floor. The window was open, and the silk curtains fluttered in the wind. It was dark outside now, and the light was still off in her bedroom. By the orange light of the street-lamp outside, she could see Flo curled up beside her slumbering away on the carpet. What an unusual dream, she thought, as she picked herself up. A frigid gust of wind rushed into the room, whistling through the window-screen and making the curtains dance madly. Autumn shivered as the temperature in the room dropped, and turned to shut the window. Just then, she noticed two curious things. First, the sunset had brought with it snow. Fluffy white snowflakes showered down steadily from the sky, which was lower than usual and lit up orange by the city lights. The world outside was brighter than normal for this time of day, as a matter of fact, and Autumn realized that she had no real idea what time it was. Dimmer than ...

The blast of the shotgun inches from Elise’s face was deafening. She heard a roar, and then nothing but a ringing sound, but what she felt was pain. White hot, searing pain ripped through her body, but it seemed most concentrated on her face. Dropping to the fetal position and letting out a scream, she felt the sensation of liquid trickling from her ear - the remains of her shattered eardrum, no doubt. But, when she went to wipe it off she was taken off-guard by what felt like stringy bits of raw bacon hanging from the side of her head. She took one between her fingers and pulled and it fell away. Clutching it in her hand, she brought herself to peek at it between her fingers. It was all that was left of her ear.

For about two weeks now, I've been asking all my dating app matches what their favorite dinosaur is. Three people have said Stegosaurus, no other dinosaur has been named more than once. I will keep this experiment going for as long as I can and keep Bluesky up to date.
