It’s so intriguing how people will assume a filmmaker despises a subject they portray as a hapless loser or tragic figure or deeply flawed individual. Or even sillier, assume they despise every real person who shares a marginalized identity with the character.
Twitter X post by Joyce Carol Oates quoting someone saying that Werner Herzog narrated footage of a person he despised in Grizzly Man

Oates tweet: When Werner Herzog presented "Grizzly Man" at Princeton & took questions about it he did not indicate that he "despised" the hapless subject. Do great artists ever
"despise" any subject? That seems very naive. Would guess that Shakespeare loved lago & Milton loved Lucifer; Cervantes loved foolish Don Quixote; & in his heart Melville identified with Ahab.

Quoted post by @RobertDeGiorno1, which is itself a quote of a video featuring Herzog’s narration in The Fire Within: A Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft
A double feature with this and grizzly man would go crazy. Both feature Werner Herzog narrating footage of people who died in pursuit of achieving greatness, but one is about someone Herzog despises and the other is about two people he deeply admires.

you can tell the monster is actually really smart, because he doesn’t say “these people I’m comprised of,” he says “these people of which I’m comprised”

watching Branagh’s Frankenstein and thinking it would actually make a good double bill with Flesh For Frankenstein, because they’re both extremely funny (the former unintentionally, I think)

If you are interested in old New York gay history, watch old episodes of The Emerald City, the first TV show made for gay and trans people. 1977, right before AIDS. My old film teacher Gene Stavis produced and interviewed in it. m.youtube.com/watch?v=2eQW...

Absolutely tore through every episode of this show that we could find when we were researching the book. An astonishing resource and time capsule of gay New York before AIDS, its existence seems impossible today. Highly recommended. Gem after gem in terms of interview subjects.

The movie has one trick it deploys endlessly: the reversal. The problem is each reversal makes as much sense as the one before or after it, which means none of them carry any narrative weight

I saw John Waters introduce a screening of BOOM! and he said he got to meet Liz Taylor but she got angry at him after only a few minutes because all he wanted to discuss with her was this movie

We invited @papapishu.bsky.social to hold forth about an almost universally despised Tennessee Williams/Joseph Losey joint, BOOM, which just might be worth another look (also it is queer as hell 👍). Get it for free at our Patreon! www.patreon.com/posts/137829...

I love reading movie reviews from dumb guys on the internet, they love saying the word "whilst" and calling things too "film school."

Wildest shit that ever happened to me on here was when I was watching CAN’T HARDLY WAIT and posted the below skeet as a joke, only to be informed that the picture actor (Charlie Korsmo) did, indeed, go on to become a Federalist Society-affiliated right-wing legal scholar

I am so sick of living in a world where certain groups insist art & culture be re-oriented to serve their tastes and whims when their own pitiful inability or unwillingness to critically engage with and contemplate creativity clearly demonstrate that art & culture are too good for them.
