The SpaceX/xAI merger situation is actually pretty important and, I think, very bad. "Data centers in space" is a bit of a pipe dream, but SpaceX now dominates low-Earth orbit in a highly concerning way. Starlink is real and could monopolize a lot of things. Not Good!

This is also resistance, god or someone else, bless Sir Ian McKellen
Remarkable performance.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

What is so striking about tech billionaires like Musk and Bezos is that there is nothing there, no class, no grace, no humour, no empathy, no style, no wit, no depth, no charm. Empty avatars of materialist greed and techno-capitalist authoritarianism devoid of all meaning.

Reading a lot of takes of accomplished journalists on the destruction of #WaPo claiming that Bezos does not understand what he is doing. With all due respect, why on earth do you *still* believe that ?

Frankly I think Apple does a pretty poor job explaining the benefits of Lockdown Mode. The website explaining it is focused on "mercenary spyware." But this court record shows it may be able to protect against very common forensic, physical access tools as well www.404media.co/fbi-couldnt-...

Floored by this story. A man wrote a pollite email to a federal prosecutor objecting to the deportation of an Afghan seeking asylum. DHS responded with an administrative warrant to get the man's info from Google, then visited his home to intimidate him.

ELIZA passed the Turing test. It’s. not hard convincing a human that something has agency - I currently think my phone hates me because it’s randomly adding typos just to pias me odd
A pretty bold comment in Nature written by linguists, computer scientists and philosophers declaring that AGI has been achieved.

"By reasonable standards, including Turing’s own, we have artificial systems that are generally intelligent. The long-standing problem of creating AGI has been solved."

The question is what precautions here look like.

To me, it seems clear there needs to be an effort to track DHS goons close to the election and to be prepared to put (lawful!) crowds outside of (the legal limit of) polling places in key districts to discourage any ICE shenanigans or intimidation.
The last time he started talking like this, his allies minimized the risks and we ended up with January 6. This time we must take him literally and seriously. These comments are a five-alarm fire for democracy. In a functioning republic, he would be impeached and removed from office today.
