One of the most surprising elements of oil pastels for me was how much the substrate affected the painting. This study was my first done on wood panel, and compared to absorbent paper, using them on wood prevents the oils from being absorbed, and the pastels work so much more like paints!

all the birds were too delightful to miss!

teen cardinal, with uneven feathering and just starting to get some red on its wings and tail, and a very patchy crest that it is raising as it perches at a bird feeder

Blue jay all puffed up with beedy little eyes looking a bit scruffy and confused in a golden sunset glow

A grackle staring directly at the camera, offended beyond belief that I am photographing it and making the shutter make these noises
