Today this movie is either an over-wrought melodrama without the quirks or a rom-com romp that barely acknowledges the underlying tragedy. But Hurt is well cast here. As a business travel veteran, I also enjoyed the little bits of golden wisdom from his books. And the last shot is still perfect.

I forgot that young Bill Pullman in dweeb mode plays his publisher. My first thought is it's a better movie with Pullman as the lead (certainly more enjoyable) but his humanity might have changed the character too much. The script smartly makes Pullman threaten the dog so Hurt seem more sympathetic.

Rewatched Accidental Tourist which holds up as a meditation on grieving. Geena Davis is still fantastic. She's introduced as the proto-manic pixie dream girl (eye roll) but quickly turns that on its head with a deep and moving performance without the benefit of flashy dialogue. Well-deserved Oscar.

I liked Body Heat, Broadcast News, and weirdly, Accidental Tourist (he's off-putting as usual but it served the character, and Geena Davis carries the movie), but that might be it. By accounts, he was not a good person.

I haven't seen Body Heat in a real long time, but he seemed to fit the role of dumb guy who thinks he's smarter than he is. In Broadcast News, he only has to play third banana as a vacuous haircut, so it works.

I can't remember if I ever saw this week's movie, but its print advertising campaign was relentless, like months ahead of time. And if I was seeing them, I'm not sure why they were targeting sports magazines. Maybe it was to save money because I don't remember seeing a trailer or TV ads.

I sat next to a kid named Ernie in first grade. He always wore a sweater with his Sesame Street namesake playing piano. The sleeves had piano keys that he would pretend to play. He also drew snakes with little feet on them. Once I told him snakes had no feet. He responded “that’s how they move.”

I didn't know it was a thing growing up until my soccer team did an exchange program and my host family took me to a place called Sparta Pizza. I'm sure I said something snarky like "isn't Sparta in Greece?" but shut up real quick once I tried a heavenly slice.

I doubt Fox declines Ohio State-Penn State regardless of how bad Penn State looks the next two weeks because the baseline and "hate watch" potential is so high. This seems like soft marketing to drive notoriety for a game that will not get the usual build up from other media sources.

Because they do not get their own day, shout out to the Greek guys who opened pizzerias with names like Sparta or Athena's Pizza where the menu would switch about a third of the way down from Italian-style pizzas to ones with Loukaniko and Feta and every pie came with a side cup of Tzatziki.

On a side note, the only previous photo of Chris Columbus I recall seeing was Gremlins-era when he looked like one of the Goonies, so this photo of him posing as a BBC documentary narrator is a bit jarring.

The Chair Company not only shares much the same vibe as Tim Robinson’s Friendship movie, but seems to share some plot points too. Hopefully it finds its own way. Friendship had one of the year’s biggest laughs, but overall was kind of underwhelming, so no need to go through the same beats again.
