Year 1 data on congestion pricing in Manhattan…

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.

Curlews on Marine Esplanade, red-breasted mergansers off Seafield, a seal before Portobello, and bar-tailed godwits, red shanks, turnstones, oystercatchers, and sanderlings all about in between.

Nice walk out to Porty today. How have I missed Aemillia before this?! That foccia lives rent free now.

I wonder if it’s…

Oh there it is.

Right above a photo of “A Deathtrap in Florida”, neat.

The photo isn’t even of the finished lane, so it’s missing all the broken pavers and current imperfections in the surface.

A review of STATS19 collision data on Rose Street: [1/?]
Living Streets Edinburgh Group is please to report that councillors have rejected council officer recommendations to encourage cycling on Rose St.
We've no objection to exempting cyclists from one-way restrictions in general but Rose Street is a special case which should never have been included.

Would you care to comment on this Royal Mail van, that looks like it habitually travels the wrong way on Rose St.? (5 secs into video)

Or the black SUV driving the length of the street for no apparent reason?

With SUVs 80% more likely to kill a child, what is real danger here?

My face when I turn left into Rose Street off Castle Street in the future.

Most planners I know are familiar with this playbook, and will also point out that democratically mandated public consultation processes are often manipulated to play into this, which is how we get watered down (or non existent) rather than transformative project outcomes.
Have you heard of “The Populist Playbook?”

A few years ago, I posted what I still consider one of my most important messages.

It was about “The Populist Playbook” that I’ve watched play out often over my 33+ years of city planning.

Since then, it’s only gotten worse.

Do the steps sound familiar?

Edinburgh Council yesterday. “Taxi drivers should be allowed to drive through red lights injuring pedestrians with out real consequences,“ Today “No way to cycling on Rose St. Pedestrians could get hurt“

In 2024 there was one fatality after a pedestrian / bike collision - in the entire UK.

Meanwhile 265 pedestrians died after being hit by a car.

So why was there huge focus on bikes using this one #Edinburgh street, but little about the vehicles using it?

Cyclist one-ways exemption

Cllr Graham proposes postpone Rose St decision, seconded Cllr Osler

🙄 Vote 4-4 then casting vote postpones Rose St

Weird voting: 1 Libdem for, one against

Spokes view:
🙄 crazy lengthy debate re 🚲'dangers' despite existing cycling; no talk of the 🚘🚚dangers

Cairngorm Coffee’s Winter Banger & Naughty blends are absolutely fantastic.

Picked up a bag of Naughty this morning and was well pleased.

Winter Banger on espresso in the cafe. Hoping to grab a bag on Thursday. 🤩

Absolute travesty right there.

I'll just sit back and wait for further reports / investigations show that nothing is changing, and the recommendation remains the same, and all this did was delay what should've gone through in the first place.

I have further words but keeping them to myself.

"I'm know protocol is to go with the Report but I'm just going to go against that because why not."

Bollocks.

@alexstaniforth.bsky.social Your teams message was just cut off briefly, but it's so good to hear some actual sense spoken right here.
December 16, 2025 at 11:45 AM
FINALLY SOME SENSE. (More paraphrasing)

"The council has put in cycling parking in front of businesses so people can access them by bike. What we haven't done is allowed easy access onto the street for people to make use of this. This will fix that."
December 16, 2025 at 11:34 AM
"Rose Street is not a nice place at these specific hours in the evenings because of people leaving the bars."

"Yeah, so why do you think there would be more cyclists going through it at that hour?"

Absolute comedy.

The Scottish govt has dropped plans to lower the national speed limit on single carriageway roads to 50mph because it was unpopular.
It's a govt's job to do what's right, not what's popular. Reducing the limit would have reduced danger and KSIs in those roads.

“rather than taking the opportunity to champion the rights of those travelling actively and noise up the council for less vehicular intrusion on Rose St, Living Streets Edinburgh have penned an objection”

There's a top-class trolling opportunity here: "In the absence of people driving over Hammersmith Bridge it's not clear there's any demand for a car route"
In what universe could you look at this and think yeah let’s reopen this to cars.
