Exactly.

I was thinking that. I don't know why I didn't outright say it.

Grrr. Census forms.

Autocorrect *makes rude gesture*
geekgyrl.bsky.social
So, unless you could read and write well enough. Often times, there was no one on hand to correct the census taker, who where barely educated themselves.

I'm big into genealogy. And it's one of the biggest hurdles I've encountered when tracing ancestral lines. Church baptism and marriage records tend to be more accurate versus census data when it comes to names and appropriate spelling.

Also, if you look on senses forms in the 1800s through the early 1900s, a lot of names were spelled phonetically. My great-great-grandfather came from Switzerland. There it was spelled Schneiter. By the time it rolled around to his son, the spelling became Synder.

You had to have numbers memorized. Otherwise, how could you make a collect call home and have it be from "Pick me up at the roller rink?"

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Or we have delayed empathy. Especially when we are ambushed in social situations and don't have time to properly process.

I'm very empathetic to most things but have delayed empathy on occasion. It takes me a bit to catch up in those situations and have an appropriate reaction.

I mean, picking anyone on the right side of history would be "trolling" him at this point. There's so much wrong about him, it isn't hard.
