Today in I’m Very Bad at Self-Promotion, this article that I wrote about the rise of contemplative practices in contemporary Christian contemplative practices just came out. This was really fun to research and write! I could write a whole giant essay about my dude St. Benedict and his Rule.

FINAL REVEAL: A brand new Benin bronze plaque, titled "Looting of the Oba's Palace in 1897".

This #newarrival confronts the theft of works from Benin in 1897. It shows what the palace altar looked like before 1897 (left), and British soldiers in the act of looting (right).

THE ROMAN EMPIRE LITERALLY GAVE EVERYBODY FREE BREAD

THAT'S ALL THEY DID IN EGYPT, WAS GROW GRAIN TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO THE REST OF THE EMPIRE

IF THE BREAD DOLE WAS INTERRUPTED FOR 36 HOURS THERE WERE RIOTS

THE ROMAN EMPIRE WAS ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE BUREAUCRATIC STATE APPARATUSES IN HISTORY
As Jesus once put it: "what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and then have to pay the mansion tax?"

As an ordinand, I did CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education). As a priest, I am sitting in my office looking out the window at the playground of the CPE (Centre de Petite Enfance) that leases half our building.
Our new-ish Diocesan Secretary is initialised in meeting minutes as JPL and I keep reading “Jet Propulsion Laboratory”

I think this is my new Police and Crime Commissioner/Parochial Church Council issue

This is amazing. (Sadly, I assume the Onion cannot be distributed as a physical newspaper in Canada.)
Here's a note I sent to our members about what we did with their money, and why we expect the Onion to outgrow the Washington Post.

We keep doing weird, hard shit — taunting ICE, yelling at Congress for not taunting ICE, buying bad websites — when nobody else does.

Our members keep getting papers.

As always when I post about being trans, a reminder: if you support me because I'm "normal" or "reasonable" or whatever because I dress like an old man & go to church, but you don't support all my trans siblings, then you don't actually support me at all, & I encourage you to do some soul searching.

This is how my mother does it (and therefore how I do it). You COOK the stuffing on the stovetop, and then stuff it into the bird WHILE HOT. It's totally safe and incredibly delicious. It actually HELPS the turkey to be evenly cooked and moist.
I cook my stuffing inside the turkey. My family has been doing it that way for almost 80 years. Not a single person has ever been food poisoned. I don’t stuff it too full, I put it straight in the oven after stuffing, I monitor the stuffing temperature, it’s fucking delicious, and I DO NOT APOLOGIZE

Ah, soiled, defiled, oppressing city! It has listened to no voice; it has accepted no correction. It has not trusted in the Lord; it has not drawn near to its God. The officials within it are roaring lions; its judges are evening wolves that leave nothing until the morning.
